I interviewed podcaster Wilbur You about his career, what inspires him, and his YouTalk podcast.
My name is Wilbur You, CEO and Founder of Youtech marketing agency.
I founded Youtech in 2012 with a $600 investment and in just eight years, it grew into a $25+ million dollar company. Youtech’s team consists of over 70 creative experts in advertising, design, development and more. We help generate more than $1 billion in sales for our clients worldwide and have serviced over 1,000 clients including MillerCoors, Chick-fil-a and 3M. Youtech has been recognized as one of Inc.’s Fastest Growing Companies in the country for 5 years running. Additionally, I was recently recognized as a winner in Forbes 30 Under 30.
We originally started by filming over video and the actual podcast came later. We launched our podcast Youtalk as an extension of Youtech. We wanted to provide marketers with tips, tricks and resources to help them stay ahead of every emerging trend.
Youtalk is available on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Breaker, Pocket Casts,
Radio Public, and Youtube.
Each episode of Youtalk covers a variety of topics such as establishing relationships, offering advice, sharing stories, and expressing the importance of original research—all related to marketing, sales, and business.
Youtalk aims to offer a genuine look inside the minds of industry professionals and each recording is raw, unrehearsed, and captures each discussion in just one take.
I am the co-host to Youtech’s Chief Marketing Officer, Michael Norris.
We produce as well as market the entire podcast in-house. Youtalk is recorded both by video and audio so we record, edit, and market Youtalk from start to finish in both formats.
Our conversations are candid, although we prepare a few questions and talking points in advance to keep conversations flowing. We source inspiration from marketing focused groups and communities on LinkedIn, Twitter, Reddit, and Facebook. Additionally, we draw from other podcasts that we like and tailor questions or topics to fit our audience’s interests.
Otherwise, Youtalk recordings are raw, unrehearsed, and capture each discussion in just one take.
Staying original can be a challenge at times. A lot of people tend to become repetitive over time. They bang the same drum over and over again. We don’t want to be like that.
I’m kind of all over the place. I don’t really have any favorites of my own. My tastes are pretty diverse.
I’m surprised at how often people tell me it’s made an impact on them. We don’t have the most listeners—far from it actually. But those who do listen are very vocal and detailed in what it means to them. It’s humbling.
Three key things to remember: consistency, content, and promotion.
It is crucial for podcasters to be consistent if you want to grow your podcast. Put out new episodes regularly. Additionally, there needs to be sufficient amounts of content that will keep your listeners intrigued. Most people listen to podcasts for entertainment or to learn a new skill so keeping content new and fresh is important. Lastly, you need to get the word out. Promote your podcast and interact with listeners through social media channels most relevant to them.
We are very proud of Youtalk and its growth. At the end of the day, we want our listeners to find value in what we put out in the world. Many business focused podcasts are definitely educational but lack an entertainment aspect. We strive to help Youtalk listeners learn something while having fun. Our effort with Youtalk is worth it because we understand that we’re all humans at the end of the day and humans enjoy entertainment. It keeps us (and our listeners) coming back.
We’d love to connect with you on any of our social pages.
