On The Table Read Magazine, “the best book magazine in the UK“, alternating between the Covid years and the 1970’s, in Margaret Jocelyn’s Dark Clouds, Elizabeth Wallis’s visit to the dentist takes her life in a new direction, whilst bringing back consequences from decades before.
Reminding us all of how destabilising Covid was on all our lives, Margaret Jocelyn’s intriguing new novel, Dark Clouds, centres on how whilst we all age and evolve over the years, wrong decisions can still echo in our lives for years, or even decades, later.
A routine visit to the dentist sends Elizabeth Wallis’ life in an unexpected direction when an advertisement in the waiting room brought her into unfortunate contact with a man called Jerry Smith. Whilst she tries to deal with this obnoxious man, the unexpected arrival of Covid 19 disrupts everyone’s lives, including her own. Although this brings things into perspective, the earlier unfortunate occurrence still lingers at the back of her mind.
Elizabeth remembers an occasion nearly forty years earlier, when she and her husband Edward had made a rash decision with consequences that needed to be overcome. Would she be able to do it again?
Alternating between the present and the past (1970s) and weaving in a host of the author’s personal experiences into her well-developed portfolio of characters, Dark Clouds was inspired by the Covid crisis and how such challenging times provided an opportunity for self-analysis. If we could have our time again, would we act differently?
Much of my novel takes place in a fictitious place between Cambridge and Newmarket in Suffolk, where I live. Written and inspired by the Covid crisis, I hope that Dark Clouds portrays what people were going through at the time, and how the past and present are inextricably linked.
