Why Am I Here (Jane’s Story)

Crime fiction continues to dominate bookshelves, and septuagenarian author Ed Johnson is carving out a distinctive niche with his compelling “Why Am I Here” series. The first installment, “Jane’s Story,” signals a departure from the typical crime narrative, venturing far beyond the sensationalized exploits of drug kingpins and violent crime lords. Instead, Johnson delves into the intricate machinery of criminal operations, revealing a world where fraud, theft, and deception are executed with the same precision and strategy as legitimate business practices.

Each book in the six-part series focuses on a new character, all initially incarcerated and professing their innocence, setting the stage for an extended and thrilling journey through the layers of the criminal underworld. Readers are invited to piece together a complex web of intrigue, uncovering deeper secrets that will hold them captive until the final page of the last book.

“Why Am I Here” invites readers to delve into the shadowy recesses of organized crime, revealing the sophisticated networks that operate beyond the familiar narratives. Johnson exposes a world where theft, fraud, and borderline legal activities form a complex ecosystem. He prompts us to ask: Who are the masterminds orchestrating these seemingly seamless operations? How do they evade detection while operating with such efficiency?

In our everyday lives, we rely on readily available services like plumbers and electricians, found through simple searches or recommendations. However, the criminal underworld operates on a far more clandestine level. Consider the network of fences, who trade in stolen goods. They rely on a system of discreet suppliers and buyers, where questions are never asked. Johnson takes this concept further, exploring the idea of “sub-contractors” – skilled individuals specializing in specific illegal activities – and “facilitators” who connect the various players in this covert market.

Johnson’s series offers a deep dive into this hidden society, shedding light on how organized crime functions with the same efficiency and connectivity as legitimate businesses. He reveals a world where expertise and connections are paramount, and where the infrastructure of crime mirrors the operational frameworks of corporate enterprises.

For those curious about the intricacies of the criminal world and its unseen, organized culture, “Why Am I Here” serves as an insightful guide. Johnson’s work provides a chillingly realistic glimpse into how these hidden networks operate, thrive, and evade detection, offering a compelling narrative that goes far beyond the typical crime fiction tropes.

Ed Johnson

Ed (Peter) Johnson, a child of post-war Britain, has witnessed a world transformed. From mending early computers in the 1970s to navigating today’s digital landscape, his life has been a study in change. This sweeping personal history, he believes, fuels his writing.

Raised in an era where resourcefulness was paramount, Johnson learned to “turn his hand to anything,” a skill he credits with shaping his diverse storytelling. His life, he says, has been one of fortunate experiences, providing a rich tapestry from which his narratives are woven.

I had the first idea when in my 30’s, but I have always taken on challenges, like starting an IT business in 1981 building it up during my 40’s and selling in 1997. Next was building a car, not from a kit, which I completed in my early 50’s and restoring a bungalow from the ground up in my 60’s. There is a PS here, wife, three children and charity work! Now in my early, okay mid, 70’s I am using the ideas that have been developing over the last 40 years and putting them into a much less strenuous use of time, I love the challenge and becoming an author is my current one.
