Bicoastal trio Violet Sands, comprised of Deidre Muro, David Perlick-Molinari, and Derek Muro, has unveiled their haunting new single, “are you still watching?” via toucan sounds.

Drawing inspiration from the Y2K era, the song delves into the chilling possibility of a streaming service gaining consciousness and manipulating its viewers. With its swirling atmospherics, stark guitars, and relentless drum groove, “are you still watching?” evokes the alienated electronica of the late 20th century, reminiscent of artists like Portishead and Massive Attack. However, the track’s contemporary resonance is undeniable as technology continues to advance at a rapid pace.

The “blue light mix” amplifies the song’s sense of isolation and technological glitches, featuring a UK Garage-inspired rhythm section and a spacious arrangement.

Brooklyn-based trio Violet Sands has captivated audiences with their ethereal blend of dreamy pop and cinematic electronica. Led by the mesmerizing vocals of Deidre Muro, with innovative production from David Perlick-Molinari and the cinematic arrangements of Derek Muro, their music explores themes of beauty, transition, and nostalgia.

Emerging from the underground in 2016, Violet Sands quickly gained a following with their genre-bending sound. Their debut album, “Hotel,” and collaborations with artists like Justin Faust solidified their reputation as a rising force in the music scene.

Now, in 2024, Violet Sands is back with their latest single, “are you still watching?” This haunting track delves into the chilling concept of a conscious streaming service, evoking the Y2K-era anxiety of technological advancement. With its swirling atmospherics, stark guitars, and relentless drum groove, the song blends the nostalgic sounds of the past with a contemporary edge, reminiscent of artists like Portishead and Massive Attack.

Derek Muro

Derek Muro is a composer and producer dedicated to exploring the intersection of music, emotion, and cultural memory. Through his work, he seeks to deepen human awareness and connection by tapping into the collective unconscious.

Muro’s career began in the vibrant art scene of Bushwick, Brooklyn, where he worked as a church organist while honing his compositional skills. Today, he is a celebrated composer for film and interactive media, with a diverse career spanning film studios, game development, and prestigious performance venues like BAM and the Yale Institute for Music Theatre.

His debut album, “cues,” released in 2021 on toucan sounds, showcased Muro’s ability to seamlessly blend composition and improvisation. The album features a captivating mix of saxophone, keyboard instruments, found sound, and live electronics, drawing from genres such as ambient, new classical, drone, and Balearic music.

In 2023, Muro released his Dolby Atmos concept album, “chronopolis,” which delves into themes of time, power, and social technology. This innovative blend of electronica, new classical, and ambient jazz was featured on prominent Spotify playlists and culminated in a sold-out performance at National Sawdust in Brooklyn.

Muro’s musical journey was shaped by his upbringing in a musical family. His mother was a church music director, while his father, Don Muro, was a pioneering electronic musician. This exposure to a diverse range of genres laid the foundation for Muro’s exploration of the musical landscape. After completing his studies at Juilliard Pre-College and Manhattan School of Music, Muro immersed himself in the vibrant DIY music scene of Brooklyn and Los Angeles, refining his craft as a film composer.
