Discovery

In an era defined by hidden agendas, technological upheaval, and shifting power dynamics, Louise McLaughlin’s Discovery – D-Notice Book 1, set for release on May 4, 2025, emerges as a gripping urban fantasy that seamlessly blends the supernatural with the unsettling realities of contemporary society. This electrifying novel fuses ancient mythology, political intrigue, and modern-day chaos, delivering a fast-paced, thought-provoking tale that resonates with the anxieties of our time while offering an exhilarating escape into a world where the extraordinary lurks in the shadows of the everyday.

Discovery by Louise McLaughlin

At its core, Discovery follows Cassie, a young woman in Glasgow who, at her grandmother’s urging, takes a seemingly mundane job in a government office. What begins as a humdrum role quickly unravels into a labyrinth of conspiracy, as Cassie discovers that the civil service is a front for secret organizations, supernatural forces, and high-stakes political machinations.

Lurking in her city are semi-retired gods, witches, and other supernatural beings, hidden in plain sight, engaged in a daily tug-of-war for control. But their scheming is disrupted by a far greater threat: alien invaders, unscrupulous billionaires, and shadowy forces at the highest levels of government who seek to eradicate both gods and humans. With only 10 days to save the world, Cassie’s emerging powers make her a vital ally in this high-stakes battle.

McLaughlin’s novel stands out in the urban fantasy genre for its razor-sharp wit, suspenseful plotting, and unfiltered commentary on power and corruption. The narrative juxtaposes the deep anxieties of our time—distrust in institutions, technological overreach, and elusive truths—with a thrilling escape into a world where the unbelievable feels all too plausible. The gods, witches, and politicians, constantly maneuvering for dominance, are blindsided by the possibility that their conflicts are mere distractions from a larger, more sinister return. This layered storytelling, combined with McLaughlin’s sharp humor and keen insight into the resilience of the human spirit, makes Discovery both a page-turner and a timely reflection of our fractured world.

Perfect for readers who crave escapism with a thought-provoking twist, Discovery – D-Notice Book 1 delivers a literary punch that sets it apart in one of literature’s most enduring genres. As it explores the unsettling parallels between fiction and reality, McLaughlin’s novel invites readers to question what lies beneath the surface of the everyday—and whether the conspiracies we dismiss might just hold a kernel of truth.

Mark your calendars for May 4, 2025, when Discovery hits shelves, ready to thrill and provoke in equal measure.

Louise Mclaughlin

Discovery is an urban fantasy about politicians, secret organisations, tech billionaires, gods, witches, aliens and one unsuspecting human. I wrote it because I wanted to bring some fun back into fantasy. I didn’t mean it to be a political satire, but with the world as it is today, it might feel that way.

-Louise Mclaughlin

Louise McLaughlin was born in the same hospital where George Orwell penned 1984, and her childhood in 1980s East Kilbride—marked by a library on every corner and two nuclear bunkers—reflected the lingering echoes of his dystopian vision. After earning a Master of Arts from Glasgow University, she entered the corporate world, mastering the art of paper shuffling.

Over the past 25 years, her career has evolved from administrative roles to leadership positions, where she now crafts compelling narratives for a living—trading physical paper for virtual storytelling, a modern twist on her Orwellian roots.
