My Own by Eni Aluko

Tinuke was ecstatic to start her life as a married woman – and Femi turned up at exactly the right time. Perfect!

Was it true love though? Or was she just giving in to societal pressures – especially as a Nigerian woman? What was really in it for Femi? …and how was he able to charm her sister against her?

While enduring an abusive relationship, Tinuke starts to question how her abuser gained her family’s support and, in turn, how she could now be losing everything and everyone she held dear.

How does your deepest desire become your worst nightmare?

Harrowing and traumatic first and foremost, My Own by Eni Aluko is also an uplifting read, with readers learning how having become the architect of her own transformation as Tinuke lives life on her terms.

Tinuke’s journey from Nigeria to the UK for a better life took an unexpected turn when societal expectations led her into an abusive marriage with Femi. Despite facing abuse during pregnancies, she encountered resistance when seeking help from family and community elders. As the situation escalated, involving the police and social services, Tinuke found herself navigating systemic challenges that felt like reliving the trauma.

The painful twist came when those who once encouraged her to stay in the abusive relationship turned against her, siding with her ex. Betrayal, counter allegations, and strained family relationships were now a common feature of most of her relationships.

But in the face of adversity, Tinuke questioned why her journey took such a harsh turn. Her determination to rewrite her narrative and overcome the stigma of single parenthood fuelled her. She refused to succumb to despair and aimed to heal from her traumas, embracing the commitment to build a better life for herself and her children.

Tinuke is now on a journey to create a life she could truly call her own, carving a path to independence and self-discovery.
