Resident Evil 3: Nemesis, priginally released in 1999 with a remake in 2020, is a third-person survival horror game that throws you into the heart of a zombie apocalypse in Raccoon City. Unlike its predecessor, which focused on exploring a mansion, Resident Evil 3 throws you onto the streets of a sprawling city teeming with the undead.

However, Resident Evil 3 isn’t the sole entry from this series in the top 10! In fact, Resident Evil 4 – Remake is the second most completed horror game (64% completion rate), and Resident Evil Village is the third most completed horror game (62% completion rate).

DOOM 3

DOOM 3 is the hardest to beat spooky game, with less than 4% of gamers conquering the story, while a whopping 96% gave up trying.

Doom 3 isn’t your typical “run and gun” Doom experience. Released in 2004, it took a sharp turn toward survival horror. Gone are the wide-open spaces of Mars bases from previous Doom games. Instead, you’re trapped in the dimly lit, labyrinthine corridors of the Union Aerospace Corporation (UAC) research facility on Mars. Expect jump scares around every corner, with limited visibility adding to the constant feeling of dread.

Don’t expect a constant barrage of demons. Doom 3 builds tension slowly, relying heavily on sound design and environmental storytelling. Creaking doors, dripping pipes, and eerie whispers set the stage for the horrors that await. Ammunition and health become precious commodities. Unlike older Doom games, you can’t rely on constantly finding supplies. Resource management and strategic combat become crucial for survival.

If you loved the fast-paced, demon-slaying action of classic Doom games, Doom 3 might feel slow and frustrating. But if you’re up for a different kind of Doom experience, one that prioritizes atmosphere, scares, and resource management, it’s a unique and unforgettable journey.

Painkiller Hell & Damnation

The second most challenging to complete horror game is Painkiller Hell & Damnation – with only 6% of players being able to complete this game. The story follows Daniel Garner who was given the quest of taking 7,000 souls, by Death itself, in exchange for seeing his wife again.

Painkiller: Hell & Damnation, released in 2012, is a modern remake of the 2004 classic Painkiller, blending fast-paced, gory action with biblical themes and dark humor.

Forget tactical cover and bullet-sponge enemies. Painkiller H&D throws hordes of demons at you, demanding constant movement and aggressive tactics. Juggle various weapons, including shotguns, pistols, rocket launchers, and even a stake launcher, to dispatch your unholy foes in creative ways.

Explore diverse realms across Purgatory, battling through graveyards, monasteries, castles, and even the fiery depths of Hell itself. Each environment is richly detailed and dripping with atmosphere, showcasing the game’s unique blend of gothic horror and dark humor.

While the humor can be dark and the action gory, the overall tone leans towards campy fun rather than pure horror. So, if you’re looking for a fast-paced, demon-slaying experience with a dash of dark humor, then Painkiller Hell & Damnation might be your ticket to purgatory (and beyond).

Deadly Premonition: The Director’s Cut

Deadly Premonition: The Director’s Cut, the open world survival horror, comes in third place for the hardest spooky games to beat, with only 6.1% of players completing the game’s storyline. Deadly Premonition: The Director’s Cut, released in 2010 (with an enhanced version on Nintendo Switch in 2023), isn’t your typical video game. It’s a bizarre blend of genres, charmingly weird, and a cult classic for a reason.

Imagine the small-town mysteries of Twin Peaks mixed with the survival horror chills of Resident Evil. You play as FBI Agent York, investigating a murder in the seemingly idyllic town of Greenvale. Expect quirky townsfolk, bizarre clues, and supernatural elements. Unlike most horror games, Greenvale is yours to explore. Visit shops, play minigames like fishing and bowling, or simply lose yourself in the town’s strange atmosphere. It’s a slow burn, but exploration rewards you with unique side quests and character interactions.

The game is rough around the edges, with dated graphics and clunky controls. But its quirks become endearing, with its self-aware humor and offbeat characters. Prepare for meme-worthy moments and a unique gaming experience.

Don’t expect jump scares and constant action. The mystery unfolds slowly, requiring patience and attention to detail. It’s more about unraveling the town’s secrets and getting to know its residents than traditional horror scares.

Methodology:

  • BestCasinoSites.net performed a study to discover which horror games have the highest/lowest rate of completion among players.
  • Full data can be found here.
  • Games on Steam were the focus of this study, as Steam has a large library of games with achievements, whose data is widely accessible. Data on all games currently on steam was obtained from Kaggle.com.
  • Games to be analysed were filtered to have a linear single player story. Through the use of the game IDs, Steam’s API was used to obtain data on achievements, such as the % of players who have obtained each achievement.
  • In addition, only games with a pegi 18+ tag were included, as identified either on the game store page, or from https://pegi.info/.
  • Next, astats, an achievement recording tool, was scraped. By combining the data from astats and Steam, we were able to obtain the % of people who have completed the story of each game. In addition, data on the length the game takes to beat was gathered.
  • The full methodology can be found here.
