On The Table Read, “the best book magazine in the UK“, Dr. Doug Mader’s new book, The Vet at Noah’s Ark: Stories of Survival from an Inner-City Animal Hospital is the vets account of safeguarding his staff and animals during the 1990’s Los Angeles riots.
A moving account of Dr. Doug Mader, a well-known veterinarian’s struggle to safeguard his human staff and animal patients amid the perilous realities of inner-city life and the riots in Los Angeles, as well as a celebration of the remarkable bond between humans and animals, comes from Mader.
A veterinarian’s life is difficult: making difficult decisions about people’s beloved pets, keeping up with advancements in medical care, and, in the case of Dr. Doug Mader, navigating the social unrest in Los Angeles in the early 1990s. He was as likely to be treating a lion as he was a house cat because he was one of California’s few specialists in exotic animals.
The Vet at Noah’s Ark: Stories of Survival from an Inner-City Animal Hospital follows Dr. Mader and his staff for a year at Noah’s Ark Veterinary Hospital, an inner-city LA area veterinary hospital where Dr. Mader treats a variety of exotic animals in addition to dogs and cats. This real-life drama takes place against the backdrop of the Rodney King trial of four police officers and the violent aftermath of their acquittal.
This is a book about survival, both of the staff and the pets that Dr. Mader and his staff try to save every day. They must overcome and rise above the harsh city reality of gangs, drugs, violence, traffic, smog, and deadly riots for their own survival and that of the animals who depend on them.
Dr. Doug Mader has been a veterinarian for nearly four decades and is a triple board-certified specialist. He has written three best-selling medical textbooks and numerous scientific publications, and he is a speaker with international recognition. In the Key West Citizen, Reptiles magazine, and the Long Beach Press Telegram, he has written regularly about pets.
The Fred L. Frye Lifetime Achievement Award for Veterinary Medicine, the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine Alumni Achievement Award, and the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Conservation Award all go to Dr. Mader. He has won the Western Veterinary Conference Educator of the Year award four times and the North American Veterinary Community Speaker of the Year award seven times. Additionally, he is a fellow of the British Royal Society of Medicine. While Dr. Mader practiced for a number of years in California, he now lives and works in the Florida Keys. She is Human Animal Bond certified.
