I interviewed podcaster Sheena Yap Chan about her career, her work to improve representation of Asian women, and the work behind her hit podcast, The Tao Of Self Confidence.

Tell me a bit about who you are.

Sheena Yap Chan

My name is Sheena Yap Chan and I am a Keynote Speaker, Coach, Author and Podcaster on building self confidence.

How and why did you start podcasting?

I started my podcast to create a strong representation of Asian women and also provide a support system for Asian women especially when dealing with self confidence issues.  I wanted to share real life stories of Asian women who have forged their own path, overcome obstacles and thrive.

What is your current podcast called, and how did you come up with the name?

The name of my podcast is called The Tao Of Self Confidence.  I was looking at some titles on Apple Podcasts and many of them started with The Art Of…

I ended up with The Tao because it meant The Way and self confidence was something I wanted to talk about since I knew so many women, especially Asian women, struggled with it.  A friend also helped me with the process by getting clear on the purpose of my podcast.

What platforms can we find The Tao Of Self Confidence on?

You can find them on all major podcasting platforms such as Apple Podcast, Spotify, Google Play, Audible, iHeartRadio and more.

What is The Tao Of Self Confidence about?

I interview Asian women about their journey to self confidence.

Do you host alone, or have guest hosts/partners?

I am the only host and have interviewed over 700 Asian women on this topic.

Do you edit The Tao Of Self Confidence or have someone who does it for you?

I edit them myself

Do you script The Tao Of Self Confidence, or just chat as you go?

I have a list of questions that I give to every guest.  It helps first time guest write down what they would like to talk about.

How has The Tao Of Self Confidence changed or developed since you began?

I used to released 5 episodes a week but since I have over 800 episodes, I have lessened it to once every 2 weeks

The Tao of Self Confidence

What are you biggest challenges with The Tao Of Self Confidence?

Starting was my biggest challenge and my own confidence.  I was thinking I wasn’t good enough to create a podcast.  I delayed it so many times because I was too afraid to start it.  It was one of my friends who just told me to start it without having expectations that gave me the push to launch it and I haven’t look back since.

What are your favourite podcasts to listen to?

Dear Asian Americans and Asian Hustle Network.

How and where do you promote The Tao Of Self Confidence?

Social media, newsletter  and I also ask my guest to share the episode with their audience.

Do you earn money from The Tao Of Self Confidence, or is it a hobby?

I offer online products, coaching, speaking and recently co-created a book called Asian Women Who Boss Up

What’s something you never expected about podcasting? What have you learned that surprised you?

What surprised me the most was reaching 1 million downloads.  I never thought I could reach that number.

What is the first piece of advice you would give to anyone inspired to start podcasting?

Just start, make mistakes and figure it out along the way.  Don’t wait for everything to be perfect.  Also be clear and not clever.

And, finally, are your proud of what you’re accomplishing with The Tao Of Self Confidence? Is it worth the effort?

Being able to create the book Asian Women Who Boss Up because there has never been a book that has 16 Asian Women on the front cover.  Podcasting has helped me create representation in other forms of media.
