Xander D. King’s The Rising Flame is a captivating fantasy adventure that reimagines familiar tropes with vivid world-building and compelling characters. The novel delves into modern themes of identity, power, and belonging, offering a fresh perspective within the genre.
I’ve always loved the idea of taking traditional fantasy tropes and flipping them on their heads. In ‘The Rising Flame’, I wanted to create a world where power isn’t just about thrones or armies—it’s about identity and survival.
As an openly gay writer, it was important to me to centre LGBT characters in a genre where they’re often sidelined. Writing this novel allowed me to explore not only the political intrigues of a kingdom in chaos but also the personal journeys of characters trying to find their place in a hostile world. At its heart, the book is about the resilience of the human spirit—whether that spirit belongs to a king, a witch, or a servant boy.
