On The Table Read Magazine, “the best entertainment magazine in the UK“, Dutch altrock trio, Dada’s Troost, has gone through a genuine transformation. The band’s new single, Visit From A Friend, demonstrates their new musical direction.
Dada’s Troost New Musical Direction
When the world basically stopped functioning, it brought many difficulties. Lockdowns, performances getting cancelled, the decrease in physical and psychological well-being, everything prompted a period of profound reflection for vocalist and bass player Pieter van den Berkmortel. Musically, he made the decision to begin from scratch. Being creatively free was another aspect of his desire for liberty: There are no restrictions on the types of music that can be used.

The transition from Dutch to English and the introduction of synthesizers and drum computers created almost a complete U-turn, but without losing the extravagant bass parts of the previous work. Themes like addiction and mental health now dominate, whereas in earlier works, social criticism was common.
Pieter van den Berkmortel explained that the song is about his love/hate relationship with addictive substances, like alcohol or drugs. Reflecting on those experiences inspired the song. In a way, they gave him the best years of his life: he delighted in partying, visiting different places and meeting new people. However, as he gets older, he’s increasingly opting for a steady life, and often thinks over the terrible choices he made in that period of his life. However, in the end, those choices made him who he is. The song celebrates this, it empowers him to move forwards in his everyday life.
The band is working on a new album, and recently signed a deal with the Amsterdam-based independent label AudioMazed. They are currently working on their fourth album, which should be out this fall. The band will release a number of singles prior to that album’s release.
