The Last Year Of The Wild

The Last Year Of The Wild by Lizzie Pepper

In 2060, Britain’s landscape is unrecognizable, ravaged by wildfires, storms, and the devastating impacts of climate change. Lizzie Pepper’s The Last Year of the Wild: Summer Solstice offers a poignant exploration of this dystopian future, where animals, not humans, take center stage in a desperate race to save the world.

This gripping third installment follows Rufus Robin and a cast of brave creatures as they navigate a world on the brink of collapse. Pepper doesn’t shy away from the harsh realities of climate change but instead offers young readers a sense of purpose through the eyes of nature itself. From the cliffs of Durdle Door to the windswept ruins of Hadrian’s Wall, the journey is filled with heart-stopping moments and thought-provoking reflections on the delicate balance of the planet.

The story begins with a Great White Pelican soaring above a landscape consumed by wildfires. His despair is echoed by his loyal Grey Parrot, Erithacus, who reminds him that they must focus on their own survival. Yet, the Pelican remains hopeful, recognizing the interconnectedness of all life on Earth.

The Last Year of the Wild series celebrates British wildlife and their unwavering determination to survive. Pepper’s vivid storytelling and powerful message have earned praise from readers of all ages, making these books a firm favorite among children, parents, and educators alike.

This will be my third novel to be published in just 20 months in what has become ‘the most important decade for nature conservation, if we don’t save the natural world now it will be too late,’ so I was keen to launch my series as soon as possible.

When I first started writing ‘The Last Year of the Wild,’ I wanted to create more than just a story—I wanted it to be a conversation with the next generation.

As someone who has spent years in conservation, I’ve seen firsthand the delicate relationship between humans and nature, and it was important for me to convey that through my characters. Children understand so much more than we give them credit for, and my hope is that through Rufus Robin and the other wild creatures, they not only see the urgency of saving our planet but also recognize their power to make a difference. The animals in this story reflect the strength, resilience, and heart we all need to face what’s coming.
