This will be my third novel to be published in just 20 months in what has become ‘the most important decade for nature conservation, if we don’t save the natural world now it will be too late,’ so I was keen to launch my series as soon as possible.
When I first started writing ‘The Last Year of the Wild,’ I wanted to create more than just a story—I wanted it to be a conversation with the next generation.
As someone who has spent years in conservation, I’ve seen firsthand the delicate relationship between humans and nature, and it was important for me to convey that through my characters. Children understand so much more than we give them credit for, and my hope is that through Rufus Robin and the other wild creatures, they not only see the urgency of saving our planet but also recognize their power to make a difference. The animals in this story reflect the strength, resilience, and heart we all need to face what’s coming.

Lizzie Pepper’s lifelong fascination with the natural world has fueled her passion for writing. Driven by a deep curiosity and love for nature, she has spent the last decade crafting an adventure series that reflects the pressing environmental challenges of our time.

Lizzie resides in the Cotswolds with her family, including two children, two energetic dogs, and a patient husband. Together, they share their garden with a lively cast of feathered friends: a feisty Robin, a pair of Chaffinches, a rather bossy Blackbird, and an extremely overweight Wood Pigeon!
Lizzie is delighted to be working with her talented niece Grace Moran, who has produced this amazing artwork. Grace is 20 and lives in the depths of the Devon countryside. She is currently studying Illustration at the University of Brighton.
