The Cow Who Sang A Song Into The Future

The Cow Who Sang A Song Into The Future

The Cow Who Sang A Song Into The Future, the debut feature from award-winning director Francisca Alegra, is timely, haunting, and unforgettable. It is nominated for the Grand Jury Prize at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival.

The film is filled with striking images and quietly powerful moments. It was shot in the extraordinary landscapes of Chile by Inti Briones, the same cinematographer who shot the Sovereign release Song Without A Name. The film was sensitively scored by Pierre Desprats. It also features a wonderful lead performance from Ma Maestro (Hannibal) as Magdalena, a woman who, to the surprise of her family, comes back from the dead and discovers she has an important purpose to fulfill.

The movie, according to Rogerbert.com, “reminds us we should go through life always thinking about how our choices will affect others.”

Francisca Alegra

Francisca Alegra is an award-winning filmmaker who earned her M.F.A. in Screenwriting and Film Directing from Columbia University and her degree in directing from the Universidad Católica de Chile. At the 2017 Sundance Film Festival, her short film “And the Whole Sky Fit in the Dead Cow’s Eye” won the award for Best International Fiction Short Film. At the Miami Film Festival, it won the award for Best Latin American Short Film. It was also selected at the Telluride Film Festival, Toronto International Film Festival, and New York Film Festival.

Alegra’s debut feature, The Cow Who Sang A Song Into The Future, premiered in the World Cinema Dramatic Competition at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival and was selected for the Sundance Screenwriters and Directors Labs.

The mysterious death of thousands of fish in a river in Chile in 2017 served as the inspiration for her film. Alegria explained that when she thought of those fish, she wondered if they were aware of a problem before they died. She wondered if they could see where they were going next or if they were experiencing fear during their agony. We are all suffering together now, and Mother Earth wishes that we could be more aware, more empathetic, and more willing to listen. A once gracious belief system is falling and reaching the state of agony that she has been in for a long time.
