In the world of reality entertainment, nosing into the lives of the super rich — and more importantly, their gorgeous homes — has long been a major focal point. Selling Sunset is the newest breakout star in this category.

With multi-million dollar properties nestled along the idyllic South California coast, and feuds galore, the Netflix show satisfies the LA real estate guru in our souls.

Certain homes on the show have caused a lot of buzz, but none more so than the exorbitantly priced $75m (£57,331,125m) mega mansion on North Beverly Drive that still remains unsold.

Property Prices

With this in mind, Savoy Stewart (https://savoystewart.co.uk) wondered how long it would take the average UK resident to buy the most expensive homes featured on the show so far! According to the Office of National Statistics, the average UK full-time worker’s salary sits at £31,285 per year — and with this information, here are the calculated results:

The infamous $75m (£57,331,125m) house that the Selling Sunset realtors have (so far) failed to sell, sits at number one, and with that price tag it’s not surprising. Eclipsing every other property on the show in terms of money and size, it would take the average Brit an astonishing 1831 years, 3 months, and 29 days worth of income to afford!

In second place is 8408 Hillside Avenue, which sold for £27,136,732.5m in late 2019 — the 3.5% realtor commission alone worth a cool £918,330.00. This house boasts a 53m long pool, and was much admired by both audiences and the realtors themselves. However it would take 866 years, 9 months and 29 days for the average UK worker to afford, so it’s perhaps best to set your sights on something a little more compact.

Rounding off the top three is 32506 Pacific Coast Highway or ‘Il Pelicano’, an Italian inspired home built into the rocks on Malibu’s stunning coastline. Selling in October 2020 for £20,256,944.44m, this property would take the average UK viewer 647 years and 25 days to afford, by which point it will probably be underwater anyway.

Methodology

  • https://savoystewart.co.uk were keen to find out how long it would take for the average British resident to purchase the most expensive properties on Netflix reality show, Selling Sunset.
  • The top 10 most expensive homes featured on the show so far were identified as the seed list, and all corresponding house prices and addresses were scraped from the Oppenheim Group website, with prices converted from USD to GBP on 6/4/2022.
  • Data from the Office of National Statistics was used to ascertain the average full time salary of £31,285 per annum. This was used to divide the house prices and calculate time taken to purchase, utilising https://planetcalc.com/7933/ to convert the resulting figure into years, months and days.
