I interviewed actor and podcaster Robert Peterpaul about his life, what inspires him, and the work that goes into his podcast, The Art Of Kindness.
Hi there! I’m Robert Peterpaul, an actor, writer, podcaster and major foodie from New Jersey who aims to spread kindness around like confetti.
The idea for my podcast literally woke me up one night at the beginning of the COVID-19 lockdown. At the time, I was working as a magazine editor for a celebrity news publication and was saddened by the revolving door of click-baity headlines and negative spins. In addition, there was an onslaught of gloomy news every day from all kinds of outlets.
Growing up in the arts, I understood the value artists share with the world, and, at the time, wished that the news was reporting on that instead of salacious gossip. The concept for The Art of Kindness podcast, which is to spotlight people in the arts using their platforms to make the world better, came to me in the middle of the night. The next day I hit the ground running.
The Art of Kindness name came to me in the middle of the night! To me, it fully encapsulates what the show is about: navigating kindness as an art and promoting kindness within the arts. I added in “with Robert Peterpaul” for good measure.
I’m fortunate to say it’s streaming on every podcast platform from Apple to Spotify. We were also signed by the Broadway Podcast Network, so you can find the show there as well.
The Art of Kindness with Robert Peterpaul showcases people from all corners of the entertainment industry who use their voice to make the world a better place through intimate interviews.
I host alone, but once in a while will be graced by the presence of my fiancé, Cassie!
Right now I’m a one man show – editing every episode myself. Listening to the sound of my own voice was quite tortuous at first, but I’ve grown numb(ish) to it!
I spend a lot of time researching each guest and developing a run of questions I want to ask them, breaking down their career through a lens of kindness. Of course, I love following wherever the conversation may go. I also always prepare a “kindness tip of the week” as an outro to provide listeners with a tangible tip of being kinder.
I’ve been learning as I go, so I like to think I’ve gotten better on all fronts over the course of my first season. The biggest change is that I’m now with the Broadway Podcast Network, which features amazing shows for audiences that love the arts.
It’s all a joy, but of course technology breeds its own set of challenges. The editing process is very tedious and can be filled with little hurdles. High quality audio is obviously the goal when making a podcast, so anytime that gets disrupted it can be tough to fix.
I love so many podcasts! I think Anna Faris’ Unqualified was my first real podcast obsession. I’ve also been a huge fan of Armchair Expert with Dax Shepard and Monica Padman for years. Another favorite is Little Known Facts with Ilana Levine, which is also with the Broadway Podcast Network. I’ve now been fortunate enough to get to know Ilana and have her on my podcast – it was a bit surreal!
Social media is definitely the biggest promotional tool for me, but nothing beats word of mouth! One fun avenue has been going on other podcasts to promote the show. Podcasting is such a lovely community of people. Since we have a lot of wonderful guests, the show has also received quite a bit of media attention.
It’s definitely a passion project for me, but I’m very fortunate to earn some money through our advertisers.
I’ve been pleasantly surprised by the fact that so many people listen! The notion that I can brighten someone’s day means the world to me. We’re creating what I call a kindness community with listeners around the world, and hopefully inspiring them to make kindness more of a priority in their daily routine.
Hone your voice! Figure out what unique perspective you can bring to listeners and shape your show around that. There are heaps of podcasts out there, so consider what you can bring to the space that’s authentic and unique to you. Then just dive in!
This question made me smile! I humbly say that I am really proud of what we’re doing on The Art of Kindness. It’s all about spreading kindness and striving to make the world brighter, which I think is not only worth the effort, but necessary. If my show can make even one person feel less alone or spread love around, then I have done my job.
