I interviewed podcasters Wilnona and Jade about their podcasts, including The And I Thought Ladies and The Ladies Tales, what motivates them, and what goes into producing their shows.

Tell me a bit about who you are.

Jade: I am part of The And I Thought Ladies along with my best friend in the world Wi I am a pop poet. I also love to laugh.

Wilnona: I’m Wilnona. I’m part of the And I Thought Ladies. We write books of practical poetry and we host a podcast among other things.

How and why did you start podcasting?

Wilnona: We started podcasting because the group of ladies we wrote with had to keep getting together for interviews. After our book interviews we would chat. I was taking an audio engineering class at the time and it was an assignment. Why we continue to podcast , I know for me it is an absolute blast.

Jade: I love to learn we have on so many smart guest and I get to learn from them all.

What is your current podcast called, and how did you come up with the name?

Wilnona: The And I Thought Ladies podcast is named after the brand “And I Thought Ladies.”  One of our other podcast is entitled “The Writer’s Class” this podcast is solely about the art of writing. The third one I named “Meet Hollywood Monday.”

Jade: The Ladies Tale podcast is my favorite. Professional actors do a table read of the show we write.  We also interview actors and their managers on this show.

What platforms can we find your podcast on?

Spreaker, apple, Spotify, I heart radio, Facebook& YouTube has video of the interviews

What is your podcast about?

And I Thought Ladies Podcast features guests we want to learn from. The guest can be professional tea profilers to CEO or Relationship experts. You never know what you’ll get.  All the episodes are short like around 15 minutes and they give practical advice about their profession.

Meet Hollywood Mondays: we talk to people behind or in front of the camera about their professions in Hollywood and our personal favorite the craft services table.

Writing class- Academics, awarded authors, and experts in the field of writing
Ladies Tale Podcast- The show managers is an episodic so the audience can listen to a fictionalize behind the scenes of Hollywood type of podcast

Do you host alone, or have guest hosts/partners?

We tend to host alone. Sometimes we have co-host.  If we know our knowledge base is lacking we have a co-host. Like when we had the co-creator of the show Friends our co-host was a screenwriter/actor

Or when the creator of prom for Broadway came on the show we asked a talent manager from the UK that manages theatre talent from the west end to come on and help us out.

Do you edit your own podcast or have someone who does it for you?

We don’t really edit our podcast. We love the authentic raw feel of the episode. Sometimes guest ask that we edit a few things here or there then we edit it ourselves.

Do you script your podcasts, or just chat as you go?

We definitely chat as we go.  Once in a while a guest/talent manager or agent, may ask for questions before hand. We write a script for the ladies tale podcast when we’re doing table read podcast.

How has your podcast changed or developed since you began?

When we first started it was just us yammering on and on about a subject we chose. Now we have guest. Our biggest change was with the ladies tales podcast format. We wrote a script and the actors performed the parts like a radio play. We love that. Also we changed our format by partnering with another host to make a literary variety show for a UK Radio show.

Jades: It is a little more professional and we have a tagline/motto for the podcast. We listened to the feedback from guest and our fans.

What are you biggest challenges with your podcast?

Wilnona: Our biggest challenge is scheduling the podcast after they air. They go onto so many platforms it is hard to keep track and keep the scheduling straight.  We still do this process manually.

Jade: to continuously pick wonderful and  insightful guest to be on the show.

What are your favourite podcasts to listen to?

Wilnona: The Jo Sands Voice: The Jo Show Podcast

Jade: The 52 love podcast

How and where do you promote your podcast?

We own two magazines (25 Hottest Authors & And I Thought Literary Magazine so we promote them there.  Usually we are on other people’s podcast we promote them during the interview. We do Facebook ads, we have a list of influencers we may invite to show recording.  Of course we post on social media and in some groups, but only if we are sure it will be useful to the members of the group and it is in accordance with rules.

Do you earn money from podcasting, or is it a hobby?

We get money from ads.

What’s something you never expected about podcasting? What have you learned that surprised you?

Wilnona :It always surprises me how people react to being on the podcast. A spectrum of reactions. Some people really need to be prepared, others are free flowing, still others are actually nervous.

Jade: The guest we book for our show surprises me. Yet I always walk away learning something.

What is the first piece of advice you would give to anyone inspired to start podcasting?

Wilnona: Podcasting is fun, do it because you are having fun with the show and then you’ll stick with your show. Also, good audio equipment.

Jade: Just start podcasting. If you are doing video to go along with the video remember lighting, lighting, lighting!!

And, finally, are your proud of what you’re accomplishing with your podcast? Is it worth the effort?

Wilnona We are thrilled to have these podcast.  Since we learn from each guest, and make friends with some of the guest far beyond the show it is worth the effort.

Jade:Absolutely. The old adage Anything in life worth having is worth working for.
