I interviewed Georgia Small about her acting career, and her latest project, Who Pressed Mute On Uncle Marcus?

When did you first realise you wanted to be an actor?

Probably in the womb, or very soon after. It kind of feels like a vocation. I don’t really have a choice I just know this is what I have to do with my life.

What is your favourite thing about performing?

Presence !! The few moments of a take when you are totally present with another actor, kind of in another dimension but also just fully present. It’s like a rush you don’t get from anything else. And I love audience feedback; in the theatre when you step out and you feel the energy of the audience on you, holding space for you.

Oh and if I’m allowed another thing – I love costumes and being crazy.

What classes or training sessions have you taken to support your acting career?

I trained at the extremely prestigious National Institute of Dramatic Art in Sydney. I kept having to pinch myself that I got in. I have also taken lots and lots of classes and workshops since being in London. I have also done Anthony Miendel which is a very different acting technique to drama school – I found this amazing to broaden my skillset.

What was your first professional acting job?

A short film! Called Baby Grand – you can watch it online now actually. It was a really beautiful cosy experience – I was very excited to be getting paid for each day I worked. The crew was amazing and felt like family but the end of the week. I had never been paid before, always working for free doing everything I could to get myself out there!!

Tell us about Who Pressed Mute on Uncle Marcus? Something that stands out in your memories and makes you want to find more experiences like it.

How organised the tech was! We were sent these incredible boxes of tech to our homes, with insane instructions to set up all of our own kit. We had someone talk us through each aspect of the set up – I had wires going through about 3 different rooms in my flat.

Doing an interactive feature you aren’t just an actor! You are you’re own director, lighting, sound, art director, costume, first AD – everything!! It’s super unique and gives you the most incredible appreciation for everyone’s role on set.

I have always been in awe of everyone on set and how they all know their job so perfectly – but this allowed me to really live each job, even if just for a moment!

Tell us something you were surprised by, something you had never realised about being a professional actor?

I never realised how hard it was to get an audition! I always just thought everyone auditioned all the time, but I’m learning even to be called in to tape is an incredible first step!

What are words of advice you have for other aspiring actors?

Research. Research. Research. Find out everything you can about everyone and everything going on in your industry. I reached out to all the casting directors in London and got some big auditions before I even had an agent. And finding all my own work myself helped me get noticed by my amazing agents on Twitter!
