Available to pre- order from all good bookshops is this stunning debut collection of poetry, by yoga teacher Eloise Allen. A raw and emotional account of what it means to simply be human, it highlights that transformation is not something linear, but rather, messy and complex.
Based on Eloise’s own individual pursuit of human fallibility, the writing is reflective of shared experiences and recovery from childhood trauma, as well as life’s ongoing search for meaning, purpose and self-acceptance.
Her poetry seeks to emulate this journey: as something fluid, and ever evolving; a living entity.
For 23-year-old Eloise Allen, growing up brought many challenges, and throughout her childhood she struggled with her mental health. The youngest of 3, after finishing her A levels, she hit an impasse.
She went to study at The University of Manchester in Autumn 2019, but dropped out after a few months as she was fighting a losing battle against her own mind.
It was only when she found the solace of a holistic approach in a therapeutic community that she was able to acknowledge her past trauma and begin her healing journey. Writing therapy was a big part of her recovery and it was during this that she found she had a flair for poetry.
Then, in late 2020, she moved to Bristol to become a Yoga teacher. She now uses Yoga as a day-to-day philosophy; to connect with her body, and to deepen her inner awareness. She finds peace in nature, and excitement in travelling and learning new things.
‘I am learning, as I embrace my humanness, the value of individual perception and one’s reality: its flaws, its limitations, and its beauty in its depth, in spite of these shortcomings. I can be both and, instead of either or. And this, a personal story of emotional, body, mental, and spiritual healing, I want to share with my readers.’
Embracing my Humanness is a collection of inspiring and often haunting poems capturing Eloise’s healing journey.
It is her hope that through sharing her work, she will be able to share with others that there is no hierarchy to suffering, and that through our shared suffering as human beings, we can find a sense of connection in knowing that we are never alone in our pain.
