On The Table Read Magazine, “the best entertainment magazine in the UK“, New York artist Tess Elena has released her four song debut EP, Fire Escape, about growing up, romance, and developing sexuality.
Written after returning to New York City after living in Thailand, and being thrown back into the hustle and bustle of the big city, the debut EP from Tess Elena, Fire Escape, is a collection of four songs about growing up, sexual desires, and romantic relationships. Solid, thoughtful, and suggestive, the EP overflows with soul, raw emotion, and moving between fun loving yet wise, to strong yet vulnerabl
In “Subway DMs” Tess plays with genres and instruments, as she shares how women are often shamed for the sexuality. She writes about meeting a cute guy on the subway and feeling the sexual tension, then the conflict between wanting to make a move herself, and wanting the other person to make the first move. This catchy and fun single is sure to get stuck in our head.
Then there’s “Emotion Mommy,” a commentary on how romantic partnerships unfairly divide emotional labor and how to set clear, healthy boundaries. Tess Elena explained that she didn’t want to be the emotional caretaker in her relationships. She wanted to show how women in romantic relationships frequently bear an invisible emotional burden that is often placed on them at an unjustly high level in comparison to their male partners. She realized that the relationships should be a partnership of equals and that it wasn’t fair that she was doing all of the emotional work. Those feelings inspired her to started thinking of lyrics that would show feelings of motherhood in a romantic relationship.
The title track, “Fire Escape,” demonstrates how the songwriter’s safe haven for creative growth and the fire escape she used as a child have evolved into similar feelings in the romantic relationship she is currently in. Raw and honest, this sweet track strips back layers to the musician as she gives us a brief look into her private sentiments.
Finally, “Heart Attack” is a coming of age song about heartbreak after a girl’s first experience of falling in love. All of these songs together create a unified full picture of what her lived experience is as a woman in the present day. She needed to show the full tapestry of womanhood, with all the subtlety and complexity of being a human.
Tess Elena is an independent artist who was born and raised in New York City. Her jazz-infused, soulful take on the folk and indie pop genres has brought her name into the spotlight. Her fun loving lyricism and flair have established her as a force as a singer and songwriter. Driven by her degree in Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies, her feminist roots inspire her music with the day to day existence as a woman, and her own encounters as she develops and travels through the world.
In 2017, Elena was asked to write and perform an original song for the United Nations Youth Assembly. Since then, she has started a band and performed at venues all over New York City. As Tess Elena continues to rise, her much-anticipated EP, Fire Escape, is certain to attract attention.
