Colours Of Love

Colours of Love by R C Liston gives credence to the old saying that love is complicated by exploring the complexities that surround the relationship between Ella and Ray as mixed-race marriages have long challenging conventional societal norms and perceptions.

Ray and Ella are madly in love and plan to marry. But their backgrounds are different: she’s English and middle class, he’s Caribbean and working class. Paul, Ray’s best friend, is filled with jealousy and rage over Ella, and is determined to upend the couple’s plans for a life of happy-ever after. But why? Paul is ultimately drawn into a cascading spiral of hatred and spite for Ella that culminates in the friend Ray thought he knew disappearing down a dark and dangerous cul-de-sac of mental health and despair. If that wasn’t enough, Ella’s middle class mother has dreams and aspirations that are tested to the limit by Ella’s choice of a husband.

What unfolds is a deep, complex, traumatic, yet engaging story.

Using his significant experience as journalist writing for many of the UK’s broadsheets newspapers, R C Liston delivers a highly nuanced tale that doesn’t shy from today’s big issues, including racism, mental health and sexual violence. Simply put, Colours of Love is impressive, traumatic and utterly compelling.
