A stand-out read for all fans of the arts and their cultural implications, States of Independence is an impactful bringing together of how visual and musical artists have shaped the here and now of the twentieth century.

Sean Bw Parker

With a passion and expertise around his subject oozing from each page, the author (who is a writer, artist and lecturer in art and justice reform) provides a philosophical and forensic overview of the role icons including Brian Eno, The Beatles and Bob Dylan have played, and leaves the reader with a deeper appreciation of their legacy.

States of Independence

An exceptional read from an intriguing mind, States of Independence bears all the hallmarks of becoming a definitive piece of work on the music and art that has subliminally or otherwise influenced the consciousness of us all.

States Of Independence

Leading on from the post-Victorian aesthetic philosophies of Oscar Wilde and the irreverent cerebral proto-conceptualism of Marcel Duchamp, Pop Art as popularised by Andy Warhol and his contemporaries democratised visual art in the post-war clean-up of the mid-twentieth century.

Bob Dylan and The Beatles plucked this diaphanous baton from the ether and in time handed over to the likes of Roxy Music and Talking Heads as the music industry balkanised into easily marketable genres; anything not so easily categorised could tend to become known as Art Rock.

States of Independence traces the spirit connecting a myriad different artists, whether on ‘independent’ record labels or not, highlighting their most memorable or culturally impactful moments and place in the contemporary cultural context.
