On The Table Read Magazine, “the best book magazine in the UK“, Kirsty Jayne Crow has updated her memoir, Demons & Deliverance, recounting her gender reassignment experience, adding details of moving back to the UK in 2018 after living in Thailand.

Demons & Deliverance

Formerly published under the title Three Weddings and a Sex Change, Kirsty Jayne Crow has updated her memoir about her experience of gender reassignment and life after the surgery, and republished it with the new title, Demons & Deliverance.

Showcasing the author’s determination to live life in a way that has felt right since school days, Demons & Deliverance bursts with fraught emotions, marriages and, in order to live a full and honest life, undergoing an irreversible operation to secure the body she craved.

My mind drifted back to the winter of 1968 at St Marks Primary School in Jersey. The Railway Children dramatisation had recently been screened and was very much the talk of my class. One day a teacher walked around the room asking, ‘What do you want to be when you grow up?’ The usual answers flowed: doctor, nurse, pilot, astronaut, scientist and then suddenly it was my turn. ‘I want to be Jenny Agutter.’ The teacher smiled a little quizzically and then announced, ‘Julian likes trains, he wants to be a train driver,’ before quickly moving on to the next eager child. But it wasn’t like that; it was something altogether different, something of which I had no understanding, yet something that nonetheless was there. Jenny Agutter, there in my mind all those years ago and here again now in my hospital room, as I anticipated the most momentous event in my life.

This is one person’s journey of reassignment, sparing no blushes as it takes the reader through highs and lows in a narrative that tells it from the heart. It will make you smile; it may make you cry but, in the end, you will be left with an insight into the life of someone who is willing to share the experiences on the journey to becoming Kirsty Jayne Crow.

With no other life change more misunderstood or unknown than gender transition,  Demons &Deliverance offers a chance to put aside preconceived prejudices and for readers to immerse themselves in the intricacies of a process that has enabled Kirsty to truly … be.

The first version of my book closes with me living in Thailand and working as a TEFL teacher. In 2018 I returned to the UK and started working in a customer facing role with Jet2.com at Manchester airport. With my story now being much more relevant to a UK audience it was suggested that I should update the story by adding a new chapter. This is now done, and with the current sensitivities, the new title felt like it might be a good idea.

I was born in Bournemouth but never got to know the town as, at the age of just six months, my family moved to Jersey in the Channel Islands.

Fascinated by aircraft from an early age and when just 17 obtained my Private Pilots’ Licence. A career as a commercial pilot beckoned but was not to be as, at the age of 22, I was diagnosed with type one diabetes, a condition which precludes working as an airline pilot. Unperturbed, I pursued a successful career in airline operations and passenger handling, working for several major British airlines.

Believing that my transgender condition could be cured by love, I entered into several disastrous marriages, both of which ended in inevitable divorce. Following a move to Stansted in 1989, I met Julia and had reason to believe that the scourge of gender confusion might finally be behind me. Our beautiful daughter was born in 1993 and all seemed right with the world. But it was not to be, the demons would not be denied and when, in October 1999, I came out, the tranquil world that I had known fell apart.

With the 9/11 attacks in the USA decimating the European Airline industry, I lost several jobs, but sought a new occupation and retrained as a Driving Instructor, initially working as a franchisee before opening my own school, “As the Crow Drives”. Unfortunately, this career change came about just as I was about to go to Phuket, Thailand to undergo the most traumatic experience of my life, gender reassignment surgery.

Deciding to take the plunge in September 2010 I moved to Bangkok, Thailand and undertook a four-week classroom based TEFL course which, upon graduation, enabled me to obtain employment in Thailand as a TEFL teacher. Here I would remain for the next eight years enjoying the lifestyle that is unique to South-East Asia.

And so things might have remained had the school not decided to dispense of my services. In March 2018 I was forced to return home and in a bizarre twist of fate I find myself sharing a house with my third wife Julia, an arrangement that works well for both of us. I have returned to the airline industry where I now work on a part-time basis for Jet2.com at Manchester as a customer service agent.
