Tell me a bit about who you are.

Sandy Bell

I am a musician & songwriter living in Woodstock, NY. ..&  I am thrilled about being alive on this planet.

You can read my full bio here

When did you first WANT to write songs?

As far as I can recall, I have been mesmerized by the idea of writing a song since hearing my first lullaby at the age of 3 or so.

When did you take a step to start writing songs?

When I was about 8 or 9 I started humming into a tape recorder and eventually moved to a piano and started writing there.

What was your first song released, and what was it about?

My first song was released with a band in Los Angeles, and it was called Fragile Heart. It was about looking at the horrors of the world through the eyes of an empath and wondering if I were a part of it all somehow.

What was your latest song released, and what was it about?

At the time of this interview, the most recent song released is off of my upcoming full length record – Entelechy. The song is called Olivia Lumen and it is about a woman who lost her son but finds a way to live with her grief.

Focusing on your latest song. What were your biggest challenges with Entelechy?

I think I was nervous about recording it in the way that was in integrity to the manner in which the message came through. The song is vulnerable and powerful,  and I felt like I had a big responsibility to honor it with sort of a strong kind of gentleness.

How many songs are you working on right now?

I am currently in the pre-production phase of recording 2, but I am writing several.

Do you keep to a theme with your music, or just go where the mood strikes?

I let my heart and spirit lead.

What is your favourite song you’ve recorded, and what do you love about it?

I think it’s from my first full length record “When I Leave Ohio”. I love the title track because it really felt like my mother (who has passed)  was singing through me. It was a powerful experience.

Do you find other people’s music inspires you? Who do you listen to most?

Yes I am inspired by many artists, but I try not to listen to other singer/songwriters too much so I can retain my own voice. But I would say that currently  music from Alice Coltrane, John Coltrane and Joni Mitchell are among my favorites.

Do you write your own music, or do you have musicians you work with?

Sandy Bell

I write my own music and then I work with my creative and Life partner, Jeff Lipstein and he helps with gorgeous arrangements and then we work with additional musicians to make the actual recording.

Do you play any instruments?

I play the guitar and the piano.

Do you like performing live, or does it scare you? Where can people watch you?

I am scared all the time, and I love performing live. People can watch me when I tour or there are a few live videos on my YouTube channel. You can access all of this through my website.

Is your music available online, and where can people listen to it?

Spotify / Apple Music etc.

Are you able to make music full time, or do you have day job?

I do various things to support my music. I paint, make jewelry as well as  freelance for different places and do voice over work.

Are your friends and family supportive of your music career?

Yes very.

What’s something you never expected about being a songwriter? What have you learned that surprised you?

It’s very very hard work. And the ego must be killed in order to do it well. At least for me anyway.

Have you had any experiences that really stand out because of your songs?

I suppose when  people let me know that they have  been affected and moved in their heart by some of the songs / lyrics. That has been truly a gift.

Do you have any important events coming up we should know about?

Sandy Bell

My record release on September 15th.

What is the first piece of advice you would give to anyone inspired to write songs?

Learn an instrument if possible. Grab the song as soon as it comes to you.. Don’t let go and don’t listen to anyone who tells you that  you can’t do it.

And, finally, are your proud of your accomplishment? Was it worth the effort?

I am extremely proud of my accomplishments. I am defying major odds every day just to keep in it. This is not for the meek.
