Smooth Wheels
In an era where children’s literature is finally embracing diversity, Lorna Marsh’s Smooth Wheels emerges as a vibrant, playful, and punchy tale that doesn’t just feature disability—it celebrates it with a boldness and wit that sets it apart.

This refreshing narrative, aimed at young readers aged seven to thirteen, introduces Top Hat Tom, a quick-witted, big-hearted adventurer who navigates life’s challenges with mischievous fun and an unstoppable spirit. With his trusty wheelchair, Wheelson, and a lively crew of friends, Tom’s story is a feel-good, fast-paced journey that champions friendship, self-belief, and the power of imagination.

What makes Smooth Wheels stand out is its refusal to rely on clichés or sentimentality. Marsh, a powered wheelchair user herself, crafts a world that feels authentic and empowering, blending humor and heart with a confident, compassionate voice. Top Hat Tom is no ordinary protagonist—he’s a creatively abled youngster who transforms hospital gowns into capes and skate park ramps into stages for high-flying stunts. Wheelson, far from a standard wheelchair, is a loyal sidekick with personality to spare, accompanying Tom on adventures that turn obstacles into opportunities.
The book’s vibrant cast, including the spirited Christina, artistic Jadey, and effortlessly cool DD, adds depth and relatability, ensuring readers of all abilities see themselves reflected in the story. Lively illustrations complement the narrative, bringing Tom’s world to life with energy and charm. Through its engaging plot and dynamic characters, Smooth Wheels invites young readers to view the world from a new, empowering perspective, offering both escapism and a chance to reflect on resilience and community.

Smooth Wheels is more than a story—it’s a reminder that every child deserves to be the star of their own adventure. Marsh’s debut eloquently proves that disability is not a limitation but a lens through which to see boundless possibilities. For parents, educators, and young readers seeking a tale that celebrates diversity with authenticity and joy, Smooth Wheels is a must-read, rolling onto bookshelves with heart, humor, and a touch of mischief.

Smooth Wheels is available now, inviting readers to join Top Hat Tom and his crew on a journey where imagination knows no bounds.

As a powered wheelchair user, Smooth Wheels is an idea that had been in my head for years and it is now so amazing that it is finally on the page. Its concept comes from my thoughts around if my wheelchair could talk what would it say? What would it think about the job it does and what would it think about me.
It is a book about friendships, rising to the challenge and achieving. I really enjoyed getting to know the characters and developing them. The whole writing experience has been a real pleasure and if children enjoy the book, it will quite literally make my year.
I have Cerebral Palsy, and I am a powered wheelchair user. I was also the first woman in a powered wheelchair to get a dance degree in the UK.
I moved to Hove nearly eight years ago and it is very definitely my home now. I love spending time with family and friends and being outdoors. I also enjoy going to the theatre. I think that will always be with me. I love going for short weekends to different places in England and if somebody says something is not possible, I have a very strong desire to prove that it is. Grabbing new opportunities and seeing where they take me is what I enjoy most.
