Seven Dials Playhouse

London’s Seven Dials Playhouse is launching an ambitious new chapter, redefining itself as a vibrant hub for theatre makers and performers in the West End. With a curated programming model, expanded artist development initiatives, and a commitment to inclusivity, the venue is poised to foster creativity, collaboration, and innovation.

London’s Seven Dials Playhouse

Supporting Artists at Every Career Stage

Seven Dials Playhouse is rolling out pioneering programs to nurture theatre makers, recognizing that talent and the need for support persist across all ages and career stages. These initiatives provide resources, space, and paid opportunities to help artists thrive:

  • First Steps: A funded program offering groups of up to five theatre makers a week of creative exploration with free rehearsal space and Equity minimum pay, encouraging experimentation in a supportive environment.
  • Next Step: A structured initiative for groups ready to develop stage-ready work, providing a week of intensive development, free rehearsal space, Equity pay, and a work-in-progress sharing with industry professionals.
  • The Sketch Comedy Collective: A 12-week subsidized training program inspired by the US Groundlings, focusing on sketch and character comedy. Participants train with leading creatives, culminating in a public showcase and a paid residency for selected performers.
  • 7from7 (with Pleasance): An accelerator for seven theatre companies heading to the Edinburgh Festival, offering free rehearsal space, mentorship, and a cash grant to prepare and promote their shows.

Curated Programming for Bold Voices

Adopting a sustainable, artist-focused financial model, Seven Dials Playhouse is shifting to a curated programming approach with a box office split, reducing financial barriers for artists while providing marketing and audience engagement support.

In June 2025, the venue will launch a Pride Mini-Season celebrating LGBTQIA+ theatre makers, the first of many themed seasons to platform diverse voices. From September 2025, productions will be selected through an open application process for three annual seasons, alongside a yearly Pride season, Edinburgh Fringe previews, and a Christmas show.

A Creative Hub for Collaboration

Seven Dials Playhouse offers multiple spaces, including a 50-seat development space, a 60-90-seat main theatre, and rehearsal rooms, creating a welcoming environment for theatre makers to connect and develop work. The café and bar, open daily from 10am to 6pm, provide free public access, free Wi-Fi, and a £5 bottomless coffee and tea deal, fostering a space for creatives to gather and exchange ideas.

The Playhouse team will be available in the café for informal drop-in chats, offering guidance on applications and artist initiatives, ensuring accessibility and support for all.

Networking and Professional Development

The venue is committed to fostering collaboration through regular workshops and networking events. On 19th May, Seven Dials Playhouse will partner with Actor Care® for a workshop, talk, Q&A, and networking session. Actor Care® trains actors to handle emotionally demanding roles, with a free workshop led by creator Alan Powell (via ballot) and an open talk in the bar. Further events for June and July will be announced soon.

Securing a Sustainable Future

Seven Dials Playhouse is building a financially sustainable model, reinvesting funds from the 2024 lease sale to clear historical debt and focus on its mission. The first year of this new chapter will prioritize fundraising, visibility, and operational growth, strengthening partnerships and recruiting key roles.

As an unsubsidized charitable organization, these steps ensure long-term resilience, enabling expanded programming and ongoing support for artists.

Championing Inclusivity and Access

Seven Dials Playhouse is dedicated to breaking down financial and systemic barriers, aiming to be an incubator for the next generation of theatre makers. The venue prioritizes diversity in its programming, welcoming new writing, devised work, sketch comedy, cabaret, and more. With a commitment to anti-racism, justice, equity, and inclusion, the Playhouse strives to reflect contemporary Britain onstage, backstage, and in its audiences, ensuring relevance and responsiveness to today’s creative landscape.

By reimagining its role, Seven Dials Playhouse is cementing its place as an essential space for theatre makers to develop, collaborate, and present daring new work.
