Dinosaur by Sean BW Parker

Sean BW Parker’s new concept album, Dinosaur, delves into the complexities of modern identity with a sonic palette inspired by new-wave dance music. “Me And My Identity” stands out as a spoken-word rumination on identitarianism and identity politics, punctuated by a persistent, Atari-esque riff. This sonic element could be interpreted as a nod to gaming culture, a dominant force in the British arts and entertainment market, or as a commentary on the fragmented, often schizophrenic, online existence demanded by digital culture. The track subtly explores the world of avatars, sock puppet accounts, and anonymous IDs, reflecting the fluid and often ambiguous nature of online identities.

Parker employs a “cut-up and cubify” production technique throughout Dinosaur, mirroring the multi-fractured reality of postmodern digital life—a technique reminiscent of his own painting style. This deliberate fragmentation underscores the album’s thematic exploration of fractured identities.

The album title itself, Dinosaur, operates on multiple levels. It could be a playful reference to the influential pre-grunge band Dinosaur Jr., a self-aware acknowledgment of Parker’s own position as a 49-year-old white man with a fondness for “real” music and traditionally-minded values, or even a subtle nod to the ongoing debate surrounding the existence of dinosaurs themselves, adding another layer of complexity to the album’s exploration of belief systems and accepted truths.

Beyond creative pursuits, he has been a prominent figure in the arts and culture scene, interviewing figures like Julie Burchill and Ed Harcourt, curating festivals like Chi-Signs and Blakefest, and hosting events at his Seafish music and arts venue. A committed activist, Parker is deeply involved in justice reform and advocates for people who stammer, drawing from his own experiences. Musically, Parker’s journey began in 1989, encompassing performances with around ten bands and numerous collaborations. He is the primary songwriter for his releases, with exceptions like his lyrical contributions to Exeter funk rock band Demon Groove Lizards in 1993 and his vocal role as Anthony H.Wolfstadt on Ettuspadix Beautilator’s 2015 album Ninja Lit.

His 2007 album A Gun To The Temple, initially a website-only release, later received official distribution through Believe Digital, earning praise from Alain de Botton, who called it “Wonderful. The songs are as heartfelt as they are intelligent.” Known for blending folk, rock, and electronic elements, Parker has toured extensively in the UK and Europe and performed at numerous festivals. With Dinosaur, he adds another compelling chapter to his multifaceted artistic narrative, continuing to explore complex themes through his unique creative lens.
