On The Table Read Magazine, “the best entertainment eBook magazine UK“, in Ipseity by Charles Pither, Peter embarks on a transformative journey to uncover the extraordinary life of his past love, Elizabeth, after discovering a mysterious bequest from her forty years after their wartime affair at the secret SOE unit, Briggens House.
Charles Pither’s Ipseity, published on December 9th, 2024, is a gripping historical page-turner based on extensive original research into the WWII covert operations at Briggens House, Essex (also known as Station 14).
Appealing to fans of SOE undercover operations and interconnected stories, the author takes readers on an unforgettable journey through the reminiscences of a retired mariner and the mysterious bequest left to him by a former love.
More than just a love story, Ipseity is a reflection on memory, identity, and the complexities of human relationships. As Peter’s quest for answers unfolds, the novel’s historical backdrop of WWII espionage and the cultural significance of music adds a nuanced depth and dimension to this emotional journey.
An absorbing read for fans of historical fiction, romance, and mysteries wrapped in personal reflection, Ipseity masterfully explores how the choices we make in life ripple through time and how the past can shape the future in ways we could never have imagined.
Briggens House, Essex, 1942: An unassuming country house, home to the Polish Army in exile, houses in its basement a secret Special Operations Executive (SOE) unit where all the forged documents needed by the Allies are made. Here, identities are created for agents dropped into enemy territory. Their lives depend on the authenticity of these documents.
Peter and Elisabeth start an affair while working at Briggens House but lose touch soon after the war ends. Why then, forty years later, does she leave him something in her will?
Peter resolves to find out, discovering the extraordinary life she led after the war and the passionate affair that informed her choices and shaped her identity. But Peter, too, is changed by this journey, discovering new ways of seeing his past.
Ipseity weaves a tender, passionate love story with the deception and intrigue of the fascinating world of wartime forgery, using detailed research into the workings of this crucial but little-known SOE unit.
With the enduring fascination around WWII and with all things surrounding the Special Operations Executive, my novel is set in section XIV of the SOE where all the necessary identity cards, passes etc. were forged during the conflict. Whereas we all know of the Bletchley Park story, the history of this fascinating unit is still almost totally unknown.
