On The Table Read Magazine, “the best book magazine in the UK“, in You Were Summer by Rachel C. Goodhand, successful author Jo Washington buys a cottage in the Lake District, where she meets handsome contractor, Nyx Hart.
Rachel C. Goodhand’s own passion for house-hunting in the Lake District is the backdrop to her debut romantic comedy novel, You Were Summer. The delightful plot and whip-smart, successful female protagonist, Jo Washington, bring into play all is loved in the genre – escapism, emotional connection, humour, relationship dynamics and a big dose of optimism and hope. With sharp, witty twists and turns, readers will be laughing until the last page.
When Jo Washington’s literary agent suggests a brief change of scenery, how could he know she would swap storytelling and London for a house renovation project and the Lake District? With a stray dog in tow, Jo meets a handsome contractor twenty years her junior, Nyx Hart. With her past and present showing her a future she never thought she’d write about, Jo finds herself firmly inside the pages of her own hilarious and often touching tale.
Passionate about creative writing since her school days, this first published novel showcases Rachel’s abilities as a writer, her comedic skills and understanding of how to keep her audience spellbound. And with over 33% of books sold in mass-market paperback during 2022 being romance novels, there’s a whole host of readers out there that will not only appreciate her penchant for a home in the Lakes, but who will be delighted to stumble upon a new, contemporary and exciting romantic voice.
In my early twenties, I started a creative writing course. After receiving positive feedback on my first assignment, the smidgeon of confidence that I clung to left me. The second assignment was never started.
I continued to admire other writers’ work while secretly filling exercise books with story ideas. However, I didn’t do that with You Were Summer. I didn’t make notes. I just wrote, allowing the plot to develop and the characters to grow. Pages soon became chapters. When I penned the last paragraph, I realised I’d done it: an overthinker from a small seaside resort had written a novel.
-Rachel C. Goodhand
Rachel C. Goodhand decided one day that it was time to write a book after wondering for years whether she could. With a strong background in customer service, she is blessed with the ability to sound sincere when she apologises.
She lives in North East Lincolnshire, but her heart is always house hunting in the Lake District. ‘You Were Summer’ is her first novel.
