On The Table Read Magazine, “the best book magazine in the UK“, Michael Ruskin shares his parents love story in a powerful new book, The Vow: A Love Story And The Holocaust, about his parents finding love in Nazi occupied Lithuania.
The Vow: A Love Story And The Holocaust juxtaposes the atrocities committed by the Nazi regime in Lithuania with the remarkable bond that existed between the late David and Dora Ruskin, whose determination to survive overcame one of history’s darkest periods.
Michael Ruskin, their son, wrote The Vow: A Love Story And The Holocaust, from actual written testimony in which the author’s parents describe their harrowing experiences in Lithuania’s Jewish ghetto and the Dachau and Stutthof concentration camps from 1941 to 1945. The couple petitioned the courts in Munich, Germany, for reparations in 1964, and their documented accounts are included in the book.
During Adolf Hitler’s rise to power in Germany and subsequent Nazi occupation of Lithuania, which tragically claimed the lives of nearly 97% of the country’s Jewish population, the book begins when David and Dora are in their late teens. Michael Ruskin stated that, when you consider the odds of both his parents surviving, there is little room to doubt that they were a “miracle couple” who deserved to be honored and their legacy preserved.
According to the book, as David and Dora were herded toward the Holocaust death trains—Dachau for David and Stutthof for Dora—they each made a promise that if either of them survived, they would return to the city square where they first met seven years earlier.
Containing a wealth of personal and historical photographs and documentation, the book describes David’s agonizing search for his wife through central Europe following their liberation, which resulted in their reunion and the vow he was meant to keep. They would not be denied their love, a love that the Third Reich of Adolf Hitler was unable to end.
It is Ruskin’s sincere hope that future generations will recognize the importance of this book. It clearly demonstrates how a nation can be overrun by flagrant discrimination, hatred, and hostility toward innocent people based on an ideology that has no place in a civilized nation.
Michael Ruskin was born in Brooklyn, New York, but grew up in Perth Amboy, New Jersey. He is the younger brother of the late Allen Ruskin and the youngest of David and Dora Ruskin’s children.
Michael Ruskin earned a bachelor’s degree in political science and psychology from Ohio’s Kent State University. He worked in private consulting and corporate human resources for the majority of his 40-year career. He travels, plays tennis, dances, and hikes now that he is retired, leading an active lifestyle.
He enjoys doing research and studies spirituality as well as world history. He is the only member of his immediate family who is still alive. The Vow: A Love Story And The Holocaust is his first book, but hopefully not his last.
