Ragazzo

Ragazzo by Jon Elkon

Jon Elkon’s Ragazzo echoes the haunting power of Patrick Süskind’s Perfume, transporting readers to the 18th-century world of opera and the barbaric practice of castration. With its blend of bizarre humor and heartbreaking cruelty, the novel sheds light on the exploitation of young boys for musical gain.

The story follows Guido, a Neapolitan boy who becomes the tragic experiment of two wealthy opera enthusiasts. Through the eyes of George Frideric Handel, the composer most closely associated with castrati, Elkon offers a chilling commentary on the inhumanity of this practice.

Ragazzo is a haunting and unforgettable novel that explores the dark side of human obsession and the devastating consequences of exploitation. With its innovative structure and powerful storytelling, this book is a testament to Elkon’s talent and dedication.

This story of pain greed, murder and unfulfillable love is told in the voice of the urbane, humorous, cynical ghost of Herr Handel. Ragazzo is my magnum opus. Nearly ten years in the writing – I tried to break every rule, and finally I found a publisher who feels the same way about rules!
