On The Table Read Magazine, “the best book magazine in the UK“, author and poet Bruce Harris brings together a collection of mainly award-winning stories in Roxanne Riding Hood And Other Dubious Tales.

Roxanne Riding Hood And Other Dubious Tales

In his compilation of prize-winning short stories that celebrate life’s absurdities and contradictions, Roxanne Riding Hood And Other Dubious Tales, Bruce Harris’ passion for clever wordsmithing and embracing the eclectic is evident.

Roxanne Riding Hood And Other Dubious Tales follows a range of complex characters navigating their way through life, showcasing that in reality, all is not as it seems. Drag queen Roxanne is drafted in by the police to help prevent local sex workers from being assaulted; ‘cleaning lady’ Doreen uses company gossip to swindle money out of her bosses; pizza delivery driver Mark aims to benefit from the sexual appetites of his wealthier clients; and newly qualified pharmacist Anne is battling her way through the tedium of speed dating.

With narratives ranging from the familiar to the downright bizarre, Harris’ stories delight and intrigue, acting as a reminder that most seemingly mundane experiences are anything but. The foundations of this anthology are imbedded in a love for the quirky and implausibility that teeters on the edge of credibility.

Bruce Harris

I am a Devon-based author and poet, and have been consistently successful in short fiction and poetry competitions since 2003. Before becoming an author, I worked in journalism and as a secondary school teacher, teaching GCSE and A-Level English.

I have now published four collections of short fiction: Fallen Eagles (2021), The Guy Thing (2018), Odds Against (2017) and First Flame (2013); three poetry collections: The Huntington Hydra (2019), Kaleidoscope (2017) and Raised Voices (2014), and three novels: Howell Grange (2019), Gemini Day (2021) and The Densham Do (2022).

This book arose out of my successful participation in short story competitions over a number of years. Most of the stories in the book have won prizes, commendations or listings in reputable UK short story competitions.

The stories included in the book are meant to be funny, while at the same time retaining enough elements of normality to make them credible. I think it could be claimed that the collection is unique, because it is difficult to visualise another book of stories containing such a diverse mixture of characters and situations.
