Father Of One

Father Of One

Bursting with twists of fate and very much capturing the good, bad and the ugly sides of humanity, Jani Anttola’s Father of One is an unforgettable, heart wrenching tale, leaving a haunting and indelible mark on all that read it.

Set in 1995, having escaped the genocide of Srebrenica, a young Bosnian soldier, Maka is working to reunite with his wife and the young son he has yet to meet.  After surviving for three years under siege, the enemy forces launches a final attack on his hometown, and Maka must escape to the hills. But traversing the vast woods is a task against all odds, and to stay alive he is soon forced to make a desperate move.

Father of One is a story of deep humanity, compassion, and love, set against the harrowing background of raging guerrilla warfare and the genocide in Srebrenica. Writing in a voice that rings with clarity and authenticity, Jani Anttola opens the door on a dark moment in Europe’s recent history, as much by the nuances of what he doesn’t say, as by what lies on the printed page.

Written from firsthand experience as Jani Anttola fought in Bosnia as a soldier for the Bosnian army, the beauty and eloquence are magnified exponentially by this perspective.

Jani Anttola

In the 1990s, Finnish novelist and medical doctor Jani Anttola served in Rwanda with the French military and fought in Bosnia as a soldier of the Bosnian army. His works have been published in the United Kingdom and Finland. He has spent most of his adult life abroad, working in Africa, the Middle East, and the Asia-Pacific.

Father of One is the first-ever literary novel written in English and published in the UK by a Finn.  The readers describe my writing as ‘beautiful’, ‘brilliant’, ‘powerful” and ‘stunning’. Despite being a war novel, Father of One has been enjoyed especially by female readers.
