A Most Industrial Life
Building upon the foundation of its 2014 predecessor, this revised and expanded work is an essential read for anyone seeking to understand the lessons of the past and shape a competitive, sustainable future for 21st-century Britain.
Part memoir, part manifesto, the author offers a deeply personal account of his experiences growing up in the steel community of South Wales and navigating the complexities of British industry. Through this intimate lens, he provides a compelling narrative of the industrial and economic seismic shifts that have reshaped the nation.
Beyond personal reflection, the book delves into the critical issue of decarbonization. The author eloquently argues that this transformative shift is not merely an environmental imperative but a strategic necessity for maintaining industrial and commercial competitiveness. By addressing climate change, we can safeguard our future prosperity and prevent further ecological degradation.
While acknowledging the challenges and setbacks that have plagued British industry, A Most Industrial Life is far from a depressing tale. Instead, it celebrates the resilience and resourcefulness of communities across the country’s industrial heartlands. The author’s hopeful vision, rooted in cooperation and collaboration, inspires readers to believe that a sustainable and prosperous future is within reach.
This unique biography weaves together the author’s professional and personal experiences, offering a comprehensive picture of Britain’s deindustrialization. From the steelworks of Neath-Port Talbot to the manufacturing hubs of Manchester and Sunderland, the book traces a compelling trajectory of decline and renewal. Ultimately, the author proposes a detailed plan for decarbonization, a blueprint for regenerating British industry and securing a sustainable future.

The chronological, diary style, presentation of A Most Industrial Life enables readers to approach the whole work from the beginning, or to select time-periods of particular interest. It is based on an assemblage of both my personal experience and general events which affected me directly or indirectly.
Narrating both as a witness or participant, I describe explicitly or implicitly, many of the significant events which culminated in the deindustrialisation of Britain, while also outlining the sort of change that is needed to recover from deindustrialising.
Restructuring of policy and practices, by Government, the private sector and ourselves; all will be necessary to achieve the decarbonisation required to recover
Changes in both working and daily life are also essential ingredients. People are mentioned from time to time for the sake of providing an authentic narrative. Some are in the public domain, but those specifically mentioned do not comprise a comprehensive record of everyone involved in this story.
