In Grandad’s Chair, Miles’ long, friendless, school holidays are usually spent daydreaming and watching television. This time though, his late grandfather’s chair is delivered to his home and there seems to be magic at work, proving to Miles that chairs, people and books have one thing in common – you should not judge them by their covers!
Hidden under the leather covering of the chair he discovers clues to a world beyond his ordinary life in a North Yorkshire town in 1980, and is inexorably drawn into a dangerous world of witches, winged pigs and a mysterious tropical island.
Miles becomes ensnared in a detective journey, causing him to encounter new situations which helps him build an understanding of himself, people and events. Fearing for his life, whilst being hunted by a ferocious enemy, Miles decides that he should leave a record of his exploits. Thank goodness he did!
The novel is set in Scarborough of the 1980s, where Michael Price himself lived at the time and despite being aimed at young readers, Grandad’s Chair perfectly captures a nostalgia of times past which engages older generations too.

We all have to juggle the conflicting benefits of building a working understanding of the world based on experienced ‘truths’ versus being open to new uncertainties that challenge this model. What fascinates me is how we decide whether to refine our personal view of the world, or simply dismiss these awkward discrepancies. Young minds are particularly interesting in this respect.

Raised in Scarborough North Yorkshire, Michael Price went to study Zoology at the University of Leeds in 1977. Upon completing this education, he went on to teach or, as he phrases it, “inflict what he had learned on young minds!” After 13 years in British schools and colleges, he set off overseas, working in International schools for some 23 years.
The four years he lived in Jakarta, Indonesia, provided some most memorable experiences. It was then that he realised that much of what he previously accepted to be truths were often merely cultural conventions. This view was reinforced whilst living in other countries, with the outcome of opening his mind.
He now lives in the Hebrides, UK and writes and walks his dog regularly, collecting and sharing stories on the island.
