The cinematic world is mourning the loss of legendary actor Gene Hackman and his wife, Betsy Arakawa, who were found deceased at their Santa Fe home on Wednesday, February 26, 2025.  

The Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that deputies responded to a welfare check request at the couple’s residence on Old Sunset Trail in the Hyde Park area at approximately 1:45 p.m. Upon arrival, they discovered the bodies of Hackman, 95, Arakawa, 63, and their pet dog.  

Authorities have not yet released the official cause of death, pending further investigation.

Gene Hackman’s Career

Gene Hackman’s career spanned decades, earning him critical acclaim and a place among Hollywood’s most respected actors. He garnered two Academy Awards: Best Actor for his iconic role in “The French Connection” (1971) and Best Supporting Actor for “Unforgiven” (1992). His filmography includes a diverse range of roles in classics such as “Mississippi Burning,” “The Conversation,” and “Crimson Tide.”  

Hackman was known for his versatility, portraying both compelling heroes and complex villains with equal skill. He retired from acting in the early 2000s, choosing to live a quiet life in Santa Fe.  

Marriage

Hackman and Arakawa were married in 1991. They maintained a low profile in their later years, preferring to stay out of the public eye.  

The news of their passing has prompted an outpouring of tributes from fellow actors, directors, and fans worldwide, recognizing Hackman’s immense contribution to cinema.

The Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office has stated that there is no danger to the community. The investigation into the couple’s death is ongoing.

This news is very sad, and it is important to remember the large contribution to the movie industry that Gene Hackman gave.
