Nothingness By Michelle Yan Follows A Woman’s Existential Exploration, On The Table Read Magazine, “the best entertainment eBook magazine UK“, Michelle Yan’s Nothingness follows Michela, a young woman who embraces nothingness after being transported to the fifth dimension, only to find her inner struggles resurfacing and leading her to a profound self-discovery journey.
Michelle Yan’s philosophical debut, Nothingness, delves into the complexities of the human psyche, offering a haunting exploration of a young woman’s existential journey.
Nothingness plunges readers into the mind of Michela, a detached and apathetic 22-year-old. After being transported to the fifth dimension, Michela initially finds solace in the sensory deprivation. However, her inner turmoil soon resurfaces, leading her on a profound journey of self-discovery that ultimately culminates in a confrontation with nothingness and death.
Capturing the anxieties and disillusionment of a generation navigating a complex world, Yan’s insightful prose articulates the emotional challenges of living in a seemingly prosperous yet disconnected society. Her struggles with identity, reality, and purpose will resonate with readers who have grappled with similar existential questions, while her authentic portrayal of her emotions creates a compelling and relatable narrative. With insightful prose, she delves into themes of love, loss, purpose, and meaning, inviting readers to contemplate their own existence.
A poignant exploration of the human condition, Nothingness reminds us that our individual stories matter. Immerse yourself in this captivating novel and contemplate the profound mysteries of life. Yan challenges societal norms and encourages readers to embrace the unknown, reminding us that life’s beauty lies in its mysteries.
As a psychologist, I have written many scientific essays on the topic of human minds and behaviours, based on numerous experiments and research. Combined with my fascination with existential philosophy and the idea of nothingness and void, I have written this book to make the readers ponder the central questions of human existence. Specifically, what does it mean to exist with a form? What does it mean to exist with sensory experiences? When subjective reality conflicts with objective reality, will we choose to live in the truth or illusion?
To do so, I have introduced an element of science fiction to show the readers a world where beings exist with no physical forms and no sensory experiences (touch, smell, sight, hearing and taste). A world where spiritual enlightenment is the end goal for everyone, and communication feels like the way we think from one idea to another.
I have also used two perspectives in my writing: starting with writing in first-person to introduce the thinking style, worldview and life philosophy of the main character, then switching to third person to illustrate the objective reality she lives in. Lastly, going back to first-person in the last chapter to illustrate in detail the final inner disquiet and spiritual struggle of our main character. This would show readers her thought process before she chose to take a leap of faith to achieve her idea of self-realisation – be in one with the nothingness of existence itself.
From my reading experience, I don’t think there are many books in the market that shows a young female deep thinker. Instead of seeking our shadows in female characters who spend their days worrying about love, family and friendships, I believe many of us would find comfort in seeing a 22-year-old spiritually tortured young girl who lives in the mountain like a hermit and spends her days meditating on the nature of existence, the essence of nothingness, the anatomy of solitude, suffering and melancholy. Think a female version of Albert Camus’s ‘Outsider’ or Fernando Pessoa.
-Michelle Yan
Michelle Yan, a graduate of Durham University and the London School of Economics, holds degrees in Psychology and Behavioral Science. Her academic background and work in innovation have led to fascinating insights into human behavior. Inspired by her lifelong passion for philosophy, Yan wrote Nothingness as a tribute to both disciplines. The character of Michela reflects Yan’s philosophical beliefs and draws on her own experiences as a young woman.
