On The Table Read Magazine, “the best book magazine in the UK“, C.D. Fox’s debut thriller, Dreams, explores the fragility of the human psyche as socially awkward Oxford student Hugo’s life takes a dark turn when mysterious dreams start to plague him.

Dreams

Emotionally charged and psychological thriller, Dreams by C.D. Fox, delves deep into the fragility of the human psyche as it challenges our perceptions of reality.

Socially inept protagonist Hugo Swann is the son of an eminent psychiatrist. The shy social misfit is in his first term at Oxford University, with a new girlfriend and having new experiences, but when a series of strange dreams start plaguing him things start to go wrong.

When Hugo’s father offers psychiatric treatment to a mysterious woman, Elizabeth, who has a troubled past, his dreams begin to get worse. When Hugo meets Elizabeth, he tries to help but, he soon finds himself in need of psychiatric assessment. As disaster looms, it’s down to Alice, Hugo’s brilliant girlfriend, to find the answers. But will he want to learn the truth she discovers?

Adeptly demonstrating that psychological fear trumps physical danger every time, readers will be instantly invested in the story of Hugo Swann. But it is Hugo’s interaction with the novel’s other complex characters that carries this eloquent and multi-faceted storyline through its exploration of the concepts of illness, wellness and mental health.

With a good dose of ‘coming of age’ and a sense of ‘what might have been’ if things had happened differently running throughout, Dreams packs a weighty literary punch; and one that keeps the adrenaline pumping and the brain in overdrive long after its last page.

C.D. Fox

Dreams is written with lots of vivid depictions of the Weald of Kent, specifically the villages around Tunbridge Wells. Readers from this part of the world will enjoy having their homeland depicted. The other main location is Oxford.

Psychology and psychological research in the face of mental illness is a constant theme in the book. The novel’s mystery is resolved in the final chapters when one of the characters puts the research she’s been doing throughout the book into practice.
