On The Table Read Magazine, “the best book magazine in the UK“, Nicky Shearsby’s Beyond The Veil explores why people make the terrible choices they do when a clinical psychologist, Newton Flanigan, is sent down the rabbit hole of a serial killer suspended in history.
Whetting readers’ appetite with the tag line ‘are you brave enough to get inside the mind of a killer?’, the first of the Flanigan Files series, Beyond The Veil, sees Nicky Shearsby taking readers on a literary rollercoaster that can only be described as Stephen King meets Hannibal Lecter.
When David Mallory confesses to murder, no one assumes the body is two hundred years old. Yet he lives with the memories of those long dead, triggering events no one sees coming. Clinical psychologist, Newton Flanigan, is subsequently drawn into a sinister path, unravelling a series of murders spanning two centuries whilst attempting to uncover David’s true identity. David is hiding many secrets of death and betrayal, triggering a journey that could be Newton’s last.
Told from the protagonist and antagonist viewpoints, Beyond The Veil uncovers the mind of a deranged serial killer that has seemingly existed throughout history.
With her interest lying in the human mind and what prompts us to act in the ways we do, Nicky is not asking her readers to work out who the killer is. Rather, she takes them on a deep and twisted road trip inside the killer’s mind to reveal their twisted logic and the reasons behind their actions.
Told from a dual first-person viewpoint and following the lives of the protagonist and main character (Newton Flanigan) and the antagonist (who will be different in each subsequent volume) this perceptive and thought-provoking author offers so much more than gore.
Born in England, breaking into serious novel writing wasn’t something Nicky began in earnest until taking early retirement in 2020. She spent two decades running businesses in graphic design, magazine publication and skin care manufacturing before taking time out from her busy schedule to focus a passion on writing psychological thriller novels.
For as long as she can remember, she has been fascinated by the human mind; how we think, our emotions, the struggles life often throws our way. Nicky’s writing reflects questions not asked often enough, delving into the dark recesses of human psychology.
Her novels aim to ask questions that promote deeper and more profound thinking and behaviour. We all struggle, and escaping into fiction is the perfect way to unburden a busy mind, whilst hopefully learning valuable life lessons along the way.
