The Shadow of My Ancestral Tree

The thought-provoking collection of diary entries, Nasha Solim’s The Shadow of My Ancestral Tree, will be published on 26th October 2023. For those seeking for their voice to be heard, or living in the shadows, Nasha’s words will resonate with much-needed companionship and an empathetic ‘literary friend’ to many.

The Shadow of My Ancestral Tree is a an amalgamation of diary entries and poetry about life, written between the ages of twenty-one to twenty-four, encouraging the belief that spirits can soar once again. Through her words and thoughts, Nasha voices the experiences that many young women go through, laying bare the gamut of emotions (positive and negative) that many immigrants find themselves immersed in.

Nasha’s reflections on generational trauma, grief, heartbreak, politics, family, hope, feminism, race, diaspora, and love, are inspired by a vast array of writings both old and new, including the Quran, Khaled Hosseini, Margaret Atwood, and Eminem. While her words were initially written for private reflection, they can now provide a soothing and reassuring balm.

This is a book for the voiceless.

Nasha Solim

My anthology speaks of many young women’s experiences, particularly the children of immigrants. It is poetry about life, which explores themes of trauma, grief, heartbreak, politics, family, hope, feminism, and race.

Offering both an introspective and outward-looking perspective on these themes, this collection goes beyond the personal musings of the individual and highlights social issues affecting the collective. These poems encourage change, turning stories of sorrow into ones of hope. The Shadow of My Ancestral Tree is a collection created to bring comfort and companionship, whilst also paying homage to those who broke their backs planting trees so the next generation could feel their shade.
