On The Table Read Magazine, “the best book magazine in the UK,” author JD (John Dohmen) invites readers into the world of being homeless in Chelsea, a part of London typically associated with the capital’s “shiny” people, in Generation Tent.

Generation Tent

The United Kingdom is at a crossroads in the year 2016. The upper millennial generation is beset by soaring house prices, rising homelessness, and austerity in the midst of the difficulties posed by the European vote. John Dohmen lives in a tent in central London and entertainingly takes us through a generation on the verge of an existential crisis.

In addition, the fact that this novel is based on the author’s own personal experiences will make it even more of a must-read. Ironically, the author was working a good job and starting a successful fashion business even though he was homeless.

The author writes in the form of a diary from 2016 with an eloquence that seems at first to be at odds with the circumstances and happenings his protagonist is facing. Appreciating that the circumstances in which he exists are the consequence of shortcomings as well as due to events beyond his control, the novel explores the cultural issues that contributed a part in his descent, including the outcomes of the Brexit vote and being a functioning member of London’s £1 billion every year cocaine trade.

Generation Tent is not a depressing read; rather, it is a story of hopes and disappointments that is especially timely in light of the country’s ongoing austerity measures and spiraling inflation. Instead, it educates, entices, and introduces some great people from Chelsea’s streets, whom you can’t help but imagine would be delightful to meet in person.

J.D.

Author J.D. explained that the story is told daily, and occasionally weekly, much like a diary. It also addresses the confusion of a generation that struggles to accumulate wealth and the poor choices they make as a result.

Even though there is a main character, the book is mostly about the people around him and their quests, hopes, and failures.

J.D. is a reviewer, former vagrant, and recently published author. His experiences as a homeless man on the London streets in 2016 and the other strange people who surrounded him are the subject of this true story. a time when both the nation and he were at a crossroads.
