On The Table Read Magazine, “the best book magazine in the UK“, in gritty thriller, The Turning Point by W.J.Blackwood, Judy has been abducted, and with two new-founds, sets out to discover who was behind her abduction and plot their downfall.

The Turning Point

Grabbing readers from the outset, the action packed and edgy new novel from W.J.Blackwood, The Turning Point, is the tale of young American girl who finds herself at the prey of people traffickers. But rather than the story of a poor victim, this political page-turner sees the victim turning the tables to seek out and put a stop to those responsible for her abduction.

The Turning Point by W.J.Blackwood

Young American woman Judy is stranded in Scotland, without now idea of how it happened. She fights to discover the hidden forces of a shadowy organisation responsible for her abduction, and discovers she has been the victim of people trafficking. When her trafficker betrays the organisation, due to a hopeless juvenile infatuation with her, he pays for his choices with his life.

Judy lands among a group of isolated people, one of whom shows genuine affection for her but which she only at length is able to return. Her new companion, and an eccentric retired policeman, have been forced to recognise what is going on in the world by what has happened to her.

Accompanied by her two new friends, the trio takes the fight to California to try to discover the nature of who has done this to her. There they meet up with other rebels and they achieve some success in fighting the organisation, but their progress becomes increasingly violent as their enemy in turn reacts with ever greater fury. When it overplays its hand, it ruthlessly turns on its own to cover its tracks and retreat to obscurity. But only to wait for its next opportunity.

Bringing into play a whole host 21st century themes, including fascism, corporate overlords and a looming climate crisis, The Turning Point also offers a cautionary note as to where ‘woke’ might be leading society.

This intelligent and well-constructed thriller brings back two characters from the Blackwood’s first novel (A Warming Death), and leaves readers wanting more.

W J Blackwood is a consultant meteorologist living in the North East of Scotland.

The Turning Point is a story about our troubled times and how so much of the apparently inexplicable nature of what is going on, seems to have a common source.

It is, I suppose, a kind of political thriller, or perhaps you might call it an anti-establishment thriller. It was initially about the trafficking, for political ends, of a young American girl, but Judy quickly took centre stage, and my sketches went out the window. She effectively wrote herself, although some of the other characters had to be worked on.

The Scottish lawyer/farmer who teams up with Judy for the fightback is I suppose secondary to her, as together they take the fight to the U.S. There are many who come to their aid through the book and of the enemy we see only the bureaucratic middle level – and only one of them ultimately survives the backlash from their own organisation. This single figure and the retired policeman who goes with Judy to the U.S are both from ‘A Warming Death’, although this first story has no bearing on The Turning Point, which stands alone as a narrative.
