On The Table Read Magazine, “the best book magazine in the UK“, children’s book, Ruairí’s Rocket to Heaven by Breege Hoyne, follows Charlie’s journey following the death of his beloved brother Ruairí, to support young children with the loss of a sibling.
Bravely sharing the lived story of her family following the death of her son Ruairí (pronounced Rur-ee), Breege Hoyne’s beautiful and moving children’s book, Ruairí’s Rocket To Heaven explores the love between little Ruairí and big brother Charlie.
The first part of the story follows the family life enjoyed by a beautiful little boy Ruairí, his life with his older brother Charlie, and the things they enjoyed together e.g. playing, bath-time, cuddles and more, before little Ruairí’s terminal illness.
The second part of the story is about Charlie’s experience of Ruairí’s death and the support that has helped him since, explaining the role talking and embracing the help of support services has played in enabling Charlie to navigate everyday life going forward.
Ruairí’s Rocket To Heaven is written to help families, carers and professionals explore, and navigate the difficult topic of death and bereavement with children from the age of 4+ years old. The story has been greatly appreciated by those having to face similarly unimaginable times, helping young children explore and confront their grief.
The family of Ruairí are so deeply grateful for the care received before, during and following Ruairí’s death, that all book sale profits are being donated to Shooting Star Children’s Hospices.
Ruairí’s Rocket to heaven is the true story about the love between my two boys in their lives together, and Charlie’s journey navigating his grief after Ruairí’s death. It is Charlie’s story of heartbreak, and hope, and of the everlasting love and connection with his brother.
It is my heartfelt hope that this story will help other young children and their families in their journey grieving the death of their sibling.
– Breege Hoyne
Breege Hoyne lives in suburban London, with her husband Shane, and energetic and amazing son Charlie who she says grounds her in all that is good and right in this world, and goofy dog Rufus and cats Freddy and Monkey. She is also mom to Ruairí, her beautiful, sweet and oh so fierce little boy. In 2018 when he was just one year old, Ruairí devastatingly died from a rare and terminal disorder.
Ruairí’s life, and his death, have taken me on the biggest journey of my life. As I navigate this life every day, holding my heart and the hearts of my son Charlie and my husband Shane delicately, I am finding a new and different meaning through writing. Writing is how I navigate my grief, my life and how I honour and remember my son.
As part of my writing I have written this children’s book. After Ruairí died I turned to books to help Charlie understand his feelings and I couldn’t find a lot out there to help him. At the same time Charlie was drawing a lot and he drew a picture of his little brother going to heaven in a rocket. This idea inspired me to write this story, the story of the life and everlasting love between two brothers, and Charlie’s journey navigating his life after the death of Ruairí.
Shooting Star Children’s Hospices is a leading children’s hospice charity caring for babies, children and young people with life limiting conditions, and their families. They have provided my family with invaluable bereavement support after RuairÍ’s death. It is with much gratitude that the profit from book sales will be donated to this charity for the truly wonderful work they do. I am incredibly thankful to have their support in helping me launch my book, and also incredibly humbled to have their endorsement of my book too.
