On The Table Read Magazine, “the best book magazine in the UK“, The Cry Of The Curlew by Robin E.L. Disney, is a hard hitting tale of love, loss and people smugglers, where Albanian refugee, Marnie, is found drowning in the mud.

The Cry Of The Curlew

In The Cry Of The Curlew, debut author Robert E.L. Disney enthrals with the tale of Albanian refugee Marnie’s unconquerable spirit, and the belief that, regardless of the circumstances in which we grow up or find ourselves, we are all intrinsically the same.

Marnie’s life is marked by constant upheaval and danger, and after a dramatic rescue from an Essex marsh by an elderly woman, her life is set to be perpetually shadowed by misfortune. Just as she begins to find solace with a new family, the intrusion of the council upends her life once more, and her situation grows even more perilous when an inheritance draws the attention of the Albanian Mafia, demanding repayment for her father’s debts to people smugglers.

Faced with overwhelming threats, Marnie is forced into slavery. Yet, her indomitable spirit leads her to escape and find refuge with another family, hoping for a life far removed from her turbulent past. However, the shadows of her debt loom large, and the sense of danger is ever-present.

Delving deep into the themes of love, loss, and the devaluation of human life at the hands of people smugglers, The Cry Of The Curlew portrays the desperate struggle of individuals trying to escape poverty and their relentless search for love and belonging. Oscillating between moments of humour and profound sadness, Disney highlights the resilience and kindness of people even in the face of the hard realities of the modern world.

Through Marnie’s eyes, The Cry of the Curlew offers a poignant reflection on the immense challenges faced by refugees with a narrative that calls for empathy and understanding for those who endure unimaginable hardships in their quest for a better life.

The Cry of the Curlew confirms Robin E.L. Disney as an exciting and evocative new voice in modern literature. And his novel provides a reminder to us all to look beyond our own circumstances, and truly consider the plight of others.

Robin E.L. Disney

Retired engineer Robin E.L. Disney has travelled the world in less safe times and places. Having been helped in precarious situations and seen the kindness of people who endangered themselves to assist him, he developed an appreciation for the compassion and goodness that often lies at the core of humanity. A love of sailing, swimming, and traveling has led him to meet people around the globe, reinforcing his belief that deep down, we are all the same.

Having been arrested, jailed, and even targeted by assassins in various countries, Robin can hopefully convey some of the emotions evoked when confronting life’s difficulties.

With a passion for literature and great admiration for iconic English writers, he felt compelled to try his own hand at writing, purely for personal fulfilment. Now retired on the South Coast, Robin felt the urge to bring some of those poignant experiences to life through the journeys of fictional characters. Hopefully, you will enjoy this first literary foray born of adventures on the high seas and faraway lands.
