Bristol-based, New York-bred artist Angélica Allen, known for her captivating project My Midnight Heart, blends ethereal harmonies with hypnotic rhythms to create a unique brand of avant-pop. Inspired by the likes of Janet Jackson and Kate Bush, Allen’s music is a mesmerizing fusion of alternative R&B and experimental soundscapes.

Following a successful career that includes touring with Tegan and Sara and opening for renowned artists like Solange, Blood Orange, and Foxes, Allen took a hiatus from performing to delve deeper into music production and sound design. Angélica Allen, the visionary behind My Midnight Heart, unveils her latest single, “anew.” Written during her second pregnancy, the track explores the profound transformation of motherhood, a process she describes as an “ego-death.” The hypnotic release, characterized by crystallized vocal synths and oscillating beats, creates an ethereal and iridescent atmosphere.

The accompanying music video challenges traditional portrayals of pregnancy, presenting a dark, futuristic vision of motherhood. This bold and innovative approach reflects Angélica’s unique artistic perspective.

To enhance the listening experience, Angélica has created a series of modern meditative practices called My Midnight Rites. Four years after my daughter’s birth I had only just begun to feel like myself again. My brain, my body, my blood finally felt like they belonged to me. I decided it would be my year. My moment. But when I realized I was pregnant with my son, I knew I would have to start the journey all over again.

I struggled so much reclaiming my identity with my firstborn, I wrote this song wanting to allow myself to enter a speculative space where I gave of myself easily… Opening to the possibility of being alchemized in the process.
