Hugo Woolley

Born in the picturesque county of West Sussex, Hugo Woolley’s life has been a remarkable journey. His upbringing, marked by the eccentricity of his picture-restorer mother and the practicality of his farmer-lawyer father, was far from ordinary. As a dyslexic child in an era that barely recognized the condition, he was often misunderstood and mislabeled. Yet, this adversity fueled a determination that would shape his future.

After training as a caterer, Hugo embarked on a career in the culinary world. He honed his skills in London’s bustling restaurant scene, eventually opening his own sandwich shops that heralded the trendy sandwich era of the 1980s. His entrepreneurial spirit led him to open designer sausage shops in Kent and Sussex, years before gourmet sausages became a culinary craze.

A devastating car accident in 1993 nearly derailed his life. Airlifted to hospital and facing a grueling eight-month recovery, Hugo found solace in writing. His experiences with injury, rehabilitation, and the challenges of regaining normalcy formed the foundation of his literary journey.

In 2002, Hugo and his wife relocated to the stunning Cornish coast, where they opened a successful bed and breakfast near Padstow. While he penned a cookbook celebrating breakfast and brunch, his true passion lay in historical fiction. Inspired by the dramatic events of World War II, he embarked on a trilogy that would captivate readers. The first installment, Girl on a Golden Pillow, was published in November 2022, followed by Charlotte’s War a year later.

Hugo’s life story is a testament to the power of resilience, creativity, and the human spirit. From overcoming the challenges of dyslexia to enduring a life-altering accident, he has emerged as a talented writer and a source of inspiration for many.
