On The Table Read, “the best creativity magazine in the UK“, MPB are collaborating with Screen and Film School to support and showcase students’ short films.
MPB, the world’s largest platform for buying and selling used photo and video kit has been working collaboratively on a project with 2nd-year students from the Screen and Film School, since February 2022.
Students across the globe have had their practical learning negatively impacted by the Covid pandemic, with learning being predominantly online over the past couple of years. MPB and SFS sought to change this by commissioning students a project that provides much-needed practical support to their studies, as well as aiding their future employability. Screen and Film School embedded the opportunity into the year two syllabus with students able to ‘opt in’ to the commercial opportunity.
MPB wanted to give the students a real-time client brief, keeping the project as close to professional workflow as possible by following the creative processes of the company.
The students had to follow a project brief and pitch their ideas to the MPB team, who then shortlisted six of the groups. The shortlisted students attended pre-production meetings with MPB at their head office, where they received client feedback and mentoring before presenting their final projects.
MPB offered the students access to camera kit to help really push their creativity and to try something new. With the students borrowing £7k worth of camera equipment from the camera reseller. MPB also provided coaching throughout the experience, helping the students to understand the strategy in place for the client.
The creative brief, which aligns with MPB’s ‘Change Brand Platform’, has encouraged the students to create work exploring how videography has the power to drive change.

A joint panel, composed of lecturers from Screen and Film School and staff from MPB, has judged the six shortlisted submissions, selecting one short film as the winner and two to receive highly commended. The winning film ‘A Moment in Time’* will receive a total of £2,250 in MPB vouchers (£250 voucher for each of the nine members of the team) to spend on photo and video kit from MPB which is intended to further enable the students to develop their professional and creative skills.
The films created by the six groups will be showcased via MPB’s social channels between Friday 1 July to the 15 July. You can watch these on MPB’s Youtube, Instagram, Facebook and Twitter accounts.
Nina, Writer and Animator for ‘I Don’t Quite Know’ (highly commended) said: “It’s been good being with professionals in the industry and to get their opinion, as the company doesn’t know who you are. They just know your ideas and that’s what you get judged on with first impressions, and it’s been nice to have that.”

In September 2021, the Screen and Film School celebrated its 15th anniversary by opening a film studio, Brighton Film Studios, at their Brighton campus.
