The term “mission creep” – a gradual expansion of objectives with potentially disastrous outcomes – serves as the perfect metaphor for Roberto Antonelli’s descent. A disillusioned locum pharmacist, burdened by debt and resentment, Antonelli finds himself increasingly disgusted by the “degenerate, ungrateful and criminal” individuals he encounters. Inspired by a distorted sense of justice, he takes radical action, eliminating those he deems society’s worst offenders.

His initial “successes,” coupled with a lack of repercussions, fuel his ambition, leading to bolder and more dangerous endeavors. However, the glimmer of redemption appears in the form of a woman who offers Antonelli a chance at an honest, fulfilling life. But his past, inevitably, catches up. His nemesis, discovering his deadly activities, poses a threat not only to his freedom but also to his newfound hope for happiness.

As the narrative escalates, control is lost, and the path to redemption is irrevocably severed. Reide masterfully weaves a complex tapestry of sex, drugs, and calculated murder, taking readers on a journey that spans Bradford, the Yorkshire Dales, Cambridge, London, North Africa, and even the high seas en route to Sydney.

“Mission Creep” is more than just a suspenseful read; it’s a visceral exploration of the human capacity for both good and evil. Reide’s debut is a powerful commentary on the slippery slope of moral compromise and the devastating consequences that follow when ambition spirals out of control. Readers seeking a thriller that lingers long after the final page will find themselves captivated by the chilling world of Roberto Antonelli and the haunting questions posed by Wally G. Reide.

Wally G Reide

Wally G Reide is an anagram of Gerald Wiley who Ronnie Barker claimed was a script contributor and recluse who lived in a wood in the home counties as I do.

The original premise of my novel was to suggest that the book may have been written by the murderer. The front cover illustration is courtesy of my partner Chau Lee and has been drawn in the style of Saul Bass.
