I interviewed journalist and podcaster Angela Tuell about her career and what inspired her make her podcast, Media In Minutes.
As a former journalist and an award-winning public relations professional with more than 15 years of experience, my media relations success comes from my natural instinct to think like a reporter. I founded public relations firm, Communications Redefined, in 2013 after many years of serving corporate, non-profit, travel, B2B and other organizations in-house. I am known for my media relations expertise, strategic public relations counsel and crisis communications preparation and execution.
I help organizations gain local, regional, and national exposure; develop and implement strategic public and media relations campaigns; improve social media and reputation building efforts; develop crisis communications plans; and lead executive communications. I graduated with honors from the University of Maryland with a bachelor’s degree in journalism and a minor in government and am accredited in public relations (APR). I live near Indianapolis, Ind. with my husband, two sons, and daughter.
For many years I had wanted to start a podcast that would interview journalists and where we’d find out what makes them tick, what their passions are, what type of stories they like to write and interesting facts about them. It’s something I do daily in my role as a media relations consultant, so it was natural to record those interactions to share with others in the public relations and media professions.
Media in Minutes. I knew I wanted to have a catchy title and one that would describe what the podcast is about. After lots of brainstorming, we landed on Media in Minutes.

This podcast features in-depth interviews with those who report on the world around us. They share everything from their favorite stories to what happened behind the lens and give us a glimpse into their world.
I host alone, but always have a journalist, media professional to talk with on each episode.
We have someone on our team edit the podcast. Her name is Maria Lopez.
I do research on each interviewee and then script questions, but do ask additional questions if it makes sense during the interview.
We are about 18 episodes in and it’s stayed about the same. I try to keep each episode to 30 minutes or under.
It’s always a challenge to find time for the research, taping, writing and marketing of the podcast, but we’ve been able to keep a regular schedule and are our followers.
I love Crime Junkie. It’s two Indiana women who tell true crime stories. I also like This American Life, Let’s Go Together by Travel + Leisure and Smartless with Jason Bateman, Sean Hayes and Will Arnett.
We promote it through our social channels, LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. We also include it on our website and work with our guests to promote it through their channels as well.
We do not monetize it. That was never the goal. We do it as a way to build relationships with the journalists we work with and credibility in the industry.
I didn’t realize it would actually not be as hard as I thought it might be. It’s fun and we’ve gotten the hang of it, where at this point it’s a well-oiled machine. Of course, we’re always looking to improve, but it is going well.
Make sure you know why you are doing the podcast. Have a goal and then a plan on how you will achieve it.
Yes, I am proud. Lots of colleagues are finding the information useful and we’re building deeper relationships with the journalists we have the podcast, so it’s totally worth the effort.
