Living Like Crazy

Paul Gilbert’s Living Like Crazy is an essential guide for anyone seeking to navigate the complexities of modern life. This groundbreaking work masterfully weaves together psychology, philosophy, and evolutionary biology to offer profound insights into how societal contexts shape our behaviors, values, and ultimately, our well-being.

Living Like Crazy by Paul Gilbert

Gilbert’s accessible writing style and razor-sharp wit make even the most complex concepts easy to grasp. He delves into how our innate potential can be distorted by cultural pressures, leading to destructive patterns of behavior and negative thought processes. Through a comprehensive examination of human society, history, and evolution, Gilbert reveals the costly psychological defenses we often employ to cope with suffering, such as avoidance, denial, or aggression.

By demonstrating the transformative power of compassion, Gilbert offers a path toward greater balance, connection, health, and social well-being. He emphasizes the importance of cultivating compassion for oneself and others as a means of overcoming suffering and fostering positive change.

Paul Gilbert

Paul Gilbert, FBPsS, PhD, OBE, is a renowned clinical psychologist and professor at the University of Derby. With over four decades of research into evolutionary approaches to psychopathology, he has made significant contributions to the field, particularly in understanding the roles of mood, shame, and self-criticism in various mental health difficulties.

Gilbert’s pioneering work led to the development of Compassion-Focused Therapy (CFT), a therapeutic approach that emphasizes the cultivation of compassion as a means of promoting mental well-being. He is a Fellow of the British Psychological Society and served as President of the British Association for Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapy. His expertise has been recognized through his involvement in government guidelines and his numerous publications.

Gilbert is the founder of the Compassionate Mind Foundation, an international charity dedicated to promoting well-being through the scientific understanding and application of compassion. He has also been awarded honorary professorships at universities in Switzerland, Portugal, and Australia.

In recognition of his outstanding contributions to mental health, Gilbert was awarded an OBE by the Queen in 2011. His latest book, Living Like Crazy, continues to inspire and educate readers on the transformative power of compassion.
